Doesn't necessarily have to be coins and Im thinking it might be better if it isn't since they are so small and hard to see but something to grab attention so then once I have it I can go into coin stuff.
I find that in clubs oftentimes if I approach girls they will just look at me disgustedly and not even look at whatever trick I was going to perform. They just take me for another loser trying to steal their eggs and turn away. I would say some of the problem is delivery but also in such a dark environment coins are hard to see so it isn't clear what I am doing and so they just fall back on their default conditioning which is to blow off any unknown guy out of dogma. So I was wondering what are some routines to combat this extreme prejudice in the environment? I was thinking maybe routines involving movement and also involving some kind of bright or flourescent object. It only has to be one bit I think in order to break the crust then I can go into normal coin stuff once there is a small morsel of intrigue. Suggestions? btw I don't want to attract TOO much attention such that people from all over are gathering around to watch me since as a beginner I want to keep things contianed so it isn't as much pressure. So no elephant productions just yet |

"Extremely loud and dark clubs"?
Why? To do magic effectively you have to get and hold people's attention. Something that's extremely difficult to do in a place with lots of distractions, is very dark and is so loud you have to practically shout to have a normal conversation. Given all the possible venues, why make it harder on yourself? |

Don't do magic in an environment where it won't be appreciated. Let the person get to know you and show it if they are interested when better conditions prevail. Magic never looks good when forced on unreceptive people.

Three excellent comments above!
You may find yourself "casting imitation pearls before real swine!" In casual "parlor" situations, NATE LEIPZIG, who was a "standard act" in vaudeville, waited to be asked, before he would do a trick. In fact, he would wait to be asked several times, before he would do "something". --And then, he would watch the ladies. At the FIRST sign that they had seen enough, he finished the trick that he was performing, and QUIT! (Everything that Leipzig did, was strong enough to close!) Somerset Maugham's wrote of a scene at a cocktail party. One young lady is speaking to another young lady. #1 says to #2: "See that man in the tuxedo? He asked if I liked card tricks. I said, 'no'. He did six!"

So you want to use magic to get attention in an environment where the girls are not interested.
Their faces ("disgustedly") tell you everything: "I'am not interested" (in magic tricks or in you, or both). Then you try to do magic in a wrong environment or magic tricks are not the right way to make contact. |

As hard as it is to imagine, sometimes people just don't want to see a trick.
Reality is a real killjoy.

Well because I would always go to those places anyway and those are the places with the highest amounts of people.
After watching a houdini documentary recently I'm sure he was not one to shy away from a challenge. I bet other the famous magicians bombed a lot too when they started but they practiced and changed their apporach till they found what worked. Just like everything in life that takes skill you have to work at it whereas replies so far are saying just give up. I don't think there is any need to give up so easily as everyone is proposing. Sure I may hold your views if I know I've tried everything under the sun and still get those reactions but I haven't tried changing my approach at all yet and so I don't see why I should tuck tail and run to some other environment just yet. I know this isn't unheard of since the shoot ogawa's/apollo robbins' cultural exchange ad specifically targets magic for very loud environments. I however do not own that product By the way I have also gotten good reactions in this environment too so it hasn't been all bad but I want to increase the positive reactions. Quote:
Some ideas to work with thanks Smile though I am not fond of consumables. I think maybe a bright colored hankercheif production (- that isn't the correct name but you know where they pull infinite hankercheif out their pocket or something similar what is its proper name?) might do the trick and maybe a vanish of some bright object. What sleights would fit the bill for the latter? Maybe the bigger the better so it would be funnier and more magical. |

"Very loud environments" - they can't HEAR you.
"Dark environments" - they can't SEE you, or what you're fumbling. "look at me disgustedly" - they signal: Ooooh Noooooo YIKES! "They just fall back on their default conditioning (-)" - So THEY are the problem?! Please read the answer of Dick Oslund again. He walks on this planet for some years and has experience. Read it again tomorrow. Then read it again the day after tomorrow. |

If you're a working professional,,,,,you'll very often have to work enviroments that are not conductive to magic. Like it or not.
The best advice I can give is to work on your charm. Pleasant & likeable. As for tricks, keep it simple, minimum of props, and be very good at what your doing. Takes work. As for tricks/routines to do. It depends but certain things like the 3 shells & pea often get people who dislike magic, interest. And humor helps. Sometimes I'll just vanish and produce 3 silver dollars, one at a time. If they like it.... I'll do more. |

Thanks John for the confidence!
After a few more posts, it is apparent that he is determined to (as they usta say in the carnival) "go up against it". It APPEARS that he is really more interested in picking up girls. And, doesn't have the experience. He also seems to think that card tricks (or whatever tricks) are the best means to accomplish his purpose. I could be wrong, and, I'm making an unwarranted assumption! If I'm wrong, why doesn't he go to some other place that's more suitable. Houdini liked challenges, but, he was far from a good close up magician. And, when he accepted a challenge, he had one of his people "ahead" of him to check on the conditions, etc. I think the advance man was David Lustig. Houdini was not a fool, he made sure of success, before he tried something! I didn't know Houdini. He died 5 years before I was born, but, I did know Sid Radner, who "inherited" much of Houdini's props. Also, he admits he is a beginner. Nothing intrinsically wrong with that, (here comes the but: But, he wants ideas for tricks that will do the job. He, like many beginners, is "TRICK ORIENTED". PRESENTATION IS WHAT HE NEEDS TO SUCCEED, Another but: Given the atmosphere of the venue, he has little opportunity to present anything to the type of crowd, there. I don't do mental stuff, but, I think that it's safe to predict that we wont see the OP much longer.

In a venue where you are trying to meet women, expecting someone to be impressed by a magic trick before they know you will do more to alienate you then help. I am reminded of two magicians who walked into a bar in Hawaii, but for some reason they were not presented with the ceremonial Lai, a ring of flowers that are worn around the neck. The first magician sees everyone else getting one, and so he turns and says to his friend,"How come we are the only ones who didn't get laid"? His friend answers, Because we're magicians..."

Lots of good comments here, as to not being overbearing with your magic and or doing magic in situations where it will not be appreciated, understood or even remembered.
It's hard (sometimes painful) to try to make magic work in situations where people are not focused enough to follow. Makes about as much sense to do magic for the half drunken and mal-focused in sketchy situations as put forth, as it does to pretty much do magic for people in the complete dark.
