I am really excited that Christian Schenk from Card Shark in Germany has given kind permission for me to use the Phoenix playing card designs for my latest in the range of color change vests. Over the years a lot of magicians have asked if the original color change vest could be made with a playing card design, and so here it is!
The "Holy C.O.W" has been described as "the card sword on steroids" by popular U.K magician Gary Jones The effect is as follows: Magician is wearing a plain black vest. A playing card is freely chosen by the spectator from a shuffled deck. The card is signed by the spectator and is shuffled back into the deck. The magician showers the whole deck of cards high in the air above him. The cards land on the floor. It is now seen that the faces of the cards are emblazoned on the vest in a random fashion. One card is seen facing back outward. The scattered cards are seen to have become BLANK faced! The magician offers a solution and suggests that if he turns his back, the face of the turned card will be seen there. Accordingly he turns his back, but to no avail. Upon turning the front once again all cards are now showing back outward. One card is peeled from the design on the vest - it is the chosen SIGNED card! The vest is supplied with all the necessary Phoenix playing cards. Some have asked if this will be available with the Bicycle design cards. The simple answer is unfortunately NO! I went through all the correct channels to be able to use the Bicycle design, but it is not possible :-( To this end I am unsure if Murphy's Magic Supplies will be able to offer this item, as they do not stock the necessary Phoenix playing cards. Maybe this will change in the future. Any way I am happy to see the Phoenix card design here as an avatar too, which gives an indication of the popularity of the cards: Whoops! Almost forgot. There is a little video of the Holy C.O.W that I threw together quickly before the recent Blackpool convention this year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gpd8b-fiI-g |

I'm using this in cabaret on Thursday night, a full review will follow! The rehearsals have been great, the vest works like a dream and as I said to Lee, the effect is like the card sword on steroids. I start my summer season on Thursday and at my main hotel there is a mixture of children and adults, I will be doing this using a top trumps type deck, basically cartoon type pictures drawn on a blank deck, and on Friday it's an adults only gig so I will be using Lee's routine with a few changes to suit my style of working.
A few years back Lee made me a custom made Colour Changing Waistcoat for a one off corporate gig, it went down so well I continued to use it for a few seasons, I even used it at close-up gigs. The quality and workmanship of these waistcoats are first class, and the way they work is very good too...so so simple in operation. In the routine Lee supplies you use a signed selection, although you do need a few card skills, it's basic stuff really, and the way Lee has routined this the couple of moves you have to do are all very well covered. Of course you don't need to use a signed card, much like the card sword, in that case it is 99.9 self-working...although I personally will be using Lee's fantastic routine with a signed card. As I mentioned, I've not performed this yet (rehearsed it plenty and looking forward to Thursday for the real test), but having worked Lee's CCW for a number of years I know for a fact that this will be a smash hit.......the colour change in itself is a real baffler, so when they reach in and remove their signed selection they will go crazy Gary Jones.

All I can say is WOW.
That is one hell of a cabaret card routine. Gary is not exagerating when he says it's a card sword on steriods. Fantastic. Wher can I get this. Mike Donoghue |

.....and, I have also come up with a stand-up/close-up deckless "thought" of card routine with this, you have the two colour changes and in the pocket is the "thought" of card which can also has a different coloured back to the cards which are printed on the waistcoat. What I'm trying to say is, you're not limited to the routine that comes with this, you have all the time in the world to loa# a playing card, esp card, blank card with a prediction, hand drawn card....etc etc....into the waistcoat!

Happy that this has found a place in your summer shows and I look forward to the full review ;-) Thank you for the kind words too - they really mean a lot. I am not known as a card man, so I did the best I could with my limited knowledge of cardistry. I know people like yourself will come up with their own handlings and sleights, but I have offered the very basics and the actual sleights that I use for my own presentation. |
