With so much magic out there, I am trying to compile some tricks which are super quick (not necessarily easy) contemporary and you don't need a build up to understand the magic (things which look great live and on camera). Eg. The omni deck, whilst great requires knowledge that you have been using a full deck - therefore takes too long. I don't really want cards as I am happy with a snap change as quick and visual - other things I have are Stay Cool (sunglasses trick) card in phone, production of an object with flash paper, coin unique, dresscode, moving the iphone logo, haunted deck, french kiss (edited for speed) self tying show laces, coin production, extreme burn, self lighting matchbook. All of these are visual, quick - no explanation needed (at least to the camera) and relatively contemporary.
Can anyone recommend anything else please? |

There is NO MAGIC "out there"! Magic only 'happens' in the mind(s) of the spectator(s).

Not too many responses!
Looking at your OP, it appears to me, that your "repertoire" is all "catalog" tricks! They are not intrinsically "evil", but, they are, in a sense, "one trick ponies". To meet your criteria, I would suggest that you read! Learn to do tricks with whatever is at hand! Check out books like Martin Gardner's "Encyclopedia of Impromptu Magic". It has been out of print, for a number of years, but, is newly republished. It aint cheap!, but, it's an INVESTMENT! To put it briefly and simply, I will quote what MY mentors told ME, 70 years ago: "It 'aint' WHAT ya do, it's HOW ya do it!"

P.S. Five days later and, still no other comments...
OK, I'll ask YOU a question! What books have you read? I don't mean books about TRICKS! I will give you a quotation from a magician whom I wager that you have never heard of. I believe he was a countryman of yours. He said it YEARS ago, but, it's so well said that we old timers have preserved it, and we pass it on to the new fellows. "THOSE WHO THINK THAT MAGIC CONSISTS OF DOING TRICKS, ARE STRANGERS TO MAGIC. TRICKS ARE ONLY THE CRUDE RESIDUE FROM WHICH THE LIFEBLOOD OF MAGIC HAS BEEN DRAINED." --S. H. SHARPE Dariel Fitzkee said it well, too, in his "The Trick Brain", published in the mid '40s (pp308-309)" "I MUST INSIST THAT TRICKS ARE BUT TOOLS. THIS EAGERNESS TO ADD NEW TRICKS TO THE WORKSHOP, AT THE EXPENSE OF LEARNING HOW TO USE THE TOOLS WE ALREADY POSSESS, DEFINITELY RESULTS IN OVERCROWDED WORKSHOPS, BUT UNSKILLED ARTISANS." IMHO, you need to learn the PRINCIPLES OF MAGIC. You need to learn FUNDAMENTALS. I would recommend TARBELL'S COURSE IN MAGIC. Tarbell uses tricks to illustrate principles. Tarbell is NOT KINDERGARTEN! I started performing for money, when I was 13, in 1945. Unknowingly, I became a part time professional for the next 20 years. Then, I became a full time pro. until I retired in 2008. I used what I learned from Tarbell to produce a show that made me a good living all those years. End of sermon...!

To add some variety to Dick's comments (apparently falling of deaf ears)
You seek tricks that look good live and on camera. Why? The best magic effects will never appear powerful on camera because magic happens in the mind and not on a memory chip. Making the shift from "gotcha" tricks or skill demonstrations to "magic effects" is not easy as it requires appreciation of psychological ploys over gimmicks. but, I will admit that today for younger audiences, doing "quick tricks" may be more entertaining than "powerful magic." Me -- I want to create astonishment ... and communicate something of awe and wonder about life itself. a concept that might die with Dick and me. for "quickie tricks" try "sausage fingers" and "hanging spoon from your nose." Not very magical but always get a good response and are "picture perfect."
"the more one pretends at magic, the more awe and wonder will be found in real life." Arnold Furst
