So I was at some type of office I don't exactly rember, but it was a few years ago and there were two kids about 8 and 10 and I showed them a few cards tricks I did the ambitious card routine and a few other tricks, but the kids loved it they were amazed and really were inspired they wanted me to tech them a few tricks then there dad asked me to show him a trick and he said show me the same trick you showed my kids in the beginning and that was the ambitious card routine so I thought I would do the ambitious card routine in a different style so it would be hard for him to catch on so I started with two of the same cards on top so I showed the top card and double lifted the second card so it looked like the top two were different I put it in the middle and made it jump back up he was amazed because he thought I was gonna do a double lift but he was also frustrated that he didn't catch my trick so he snatched the cards out of my hands tried to shuffle them but it was obvious he has no idea how to and gave them back and said do it again this time I did a double lift and placed the top card in the middle he then snatched the cards again and said see I know what you did the cards on top then he said you can't fool me you can only fool my kids. And then he told his kids to not learn any tricks from me and not to watch any of my tricks.I them took my cards back and left. I was sooo ****ed I wanted to show him things I knew he couldn't figure out but I thought what's the point. Every time I think about the moment I still think, what should I have done? Anybody have any suggestions about what I should have done?

Were you getting paid if not end it any way you want to.

Why were you trying to show up a father in front of his kid?
What you did sounds more like an attempt to impress rather than to entertain with magic. Two different things entirely. But I wouldn't call what you did a "show," in any case. |

There's not a lot you can do if someone insists on being ultra antagonistic. Often better to show a different effect than the one they are demanding, though capitulating to the demands of a spectator rarely leads to a good experience. Also, it would have been good to put the magic back on the kids. The more the kids have fun the less antagonistic grown ups get. Alternatively, you could find a trick to do where the magic happens for the kid but the dad looks like the hero.
In this case after he snatched the cards out of your hands it probably would have been best to say something to the effect of, "Hey man, it's been nice meeting you guys but I need to move around a bit and entertain some other folks. If you would like to see some more magic please feel free to ask for me." Sounds like the guy was having a rough day and he needed some sort of a win, and you ended up being the target of that. If this was a paid gig the best thing you can do is move on and entertain other folks while politely excusing yourself. If you really wowed the kids they will seek out magic in some other form. If this wasn't a paid gig, just pack up your props and still politely excuse yourself. Even the best performer in the world can't change the hearts of someone who is intent on antagonizing you. That's why they have security in comedy clubs. When a heckler is intent on going head to head with a comic it ruins everyone's show and so instead of letting it get that far they just throw them out. For a magician in a walk around gig the best thing to do is politely excuse yourself.
