The more info you can provide, the better, Donster. I'm no expert with fog machine's, but;
• Do you want the fog to "hug the ground", or to go "floor to ceiling"?
• How much of an area do you need to cover?
• For how long do you need the fog to last?
There's a start, anyway.

Cheers!

And most important what is your Budget?!

Foggers range from $29.00 to $3900.00
Ground hug (cold fog) can be very expensive because they include built in refrigeration units.

Theres is a low fog system made by antari that takes fog fluid. And has a chamber for cubed ice, not dry ice, very cheap to run and I have used it to cover a stage approx. 8m x 7m very good for price, its is DMX controllable and probably the cheapest on the market. This gives you a dry ice effect but with out the hassle of dry ice. When I use it I normally get in touch with bars and pubs near where I am going as most bars will have ice machines and will usually give you the ice for nothing which makes it even cheaper to run.

I'll need it be mainly kept on the ground maybe a 6 to 8 foot length going across also known as the width. I'll like to keep the fog there during the performance. Don,

I have owned several cheap foggers - Martin, American DJ, Radio Shack etc.. As far as I am concerned you should get a Rosco, They have several models to choose from.

The biggest thing is to get one that will put out the fog on cue and not be going thru a heating cycle time. It is not fun being in a smoke chamber with the music and all the dancing started, your ready to fog and that little red light says "NO" you have to wait. agggh

You should check out ebay for this. They are always on sale there. I believe there is a whole category for them. I've seen them there from $20 and up. Mostly sold by dealers, but sometimes you can get a bargain from a private party.

One could be made with a shop vac and dry ice. It gives a pretty good shot of smoke but it does not sustain for a real long time.

I will try to find the exact plans but basically you make a wire basket to hold the dry ice. It is lowered into hot water in the bottom of the tank. The hotter the better. I would drill a small hole to run a wire to lower the basket down into the water. Once you lower the dry ice, pressure will build up so start your vac and it will exhaust the smoke from out to relieve the pressure.

I would sure play with it to see if it will do what you want it to do.

I have worked with the Antari low fog machine, and recommend it. It's output is great. Heres a tip, though. Fill it with ice as late as possible. If you can fill it 5 mins before performance - great! However, it is not so great an hour before. The smoke doesn't 'lie' as well if the ice has been in the machine for a long period of time.

There is also a loud 'pssshhhhhhhhh' and 'psssssss' sound given off by the Antari low fogger. In the theatre, the audience walked past it and I had to time it right so it went off seconds before the audience entered the room. It spoils the effect if they see where it is coming from.

Just my thoughts on the Antari!

"If you can't seem to find a fog machine that works, that's on eBay!";)

Sorry, but I think I know of someone who has one and may part with it, I'll ask. no promises though.

"low fog" can be very expensive. Even if you make a home-made unit, which can work very well, the cost of the dry ice will add up. For a few performance home-made dry ice is a good way to go. If you will be doing a lot of performances back-to-back then a professional 'low-fog' machine may be much, much more cost effective. If you are wanting a regular fogger, don't go cheap. I don't care what your local DJ store says, buy professional. What I have always used is High End Systems F100

For a Hazer I personally like Reel-EFX's DF50

If you can't afford to buy professional try renting it.

The machine Hugmagic speaks of can be made very easily from a deep fryer and a three inch dryer hose. If you are intersted in dry ice smoke machines there's an excellent video on it by Jay Scott Barry.

There are tons of resources on the web for building your own fog chiller. They range from modifying a coleman cooler full of ice, to employing somewhat sophisticated heat exchangers.
I made one myself several years ago, they do work pretty well. Mine is the coleman cooler variety. I might tackle the heat exchanger version soon though.
This'll start you off .. and then some:
