I agree. That's why when I offer my thoughts about "the European" guys, it is often taken way our of context, which I always find funny and just go along with, but in reality guys like yourself Jan F., Sven, Lior M. that I have great respect for and others from more of the classic or traditional approach. I think you get lumped in because of being primarily known for close up, which can be very closely related to the the euro-mentlaism, pub and ambush format, regardless of what your actual approach is and what/how you actually perform. Even I had you into this group as well until knowing more about you. Also there most are into the performing side only, with very little offered about the business side of it. (I know Kennedy has some materials on this).
It's an attitude, a style , approach and mentality. The whole propless, dual reality, stooging, processy thing. It's performer-based. Yes, for us on this side of the fence and pond it is difficult to distinguish the difference and rarely worth the effort. I know many think Atlas was from more of a classic approach but has went over to the Euro-version, simply because of his relocating. As Bernstein says, perception is everything. Guys need to do more to establish themselves in their proper side of the fence. Even guys that use classic or more traditional approaches in a more contemporary euro forma can send a confusing message to others in the community. I would much more prefer to be clearly indentifiable so there is no confusion. I know to many Colin is the same way. Seems to have a classic approach but also is part of the Euro-mentalities and applications in his work. While I won't speak for Brett, some guys walk the blurred line and are into both which can make it very confusing to others trying to figure them out. When I first stated being aware of Brett, I thought he was more of a classic or traditionalist mentalist, but the more you follow him you realize differently. He appears to walk with both with a strong influence from magic and the euro-guys. I suspect because he does closeup/strolling. Nothing wrong with it, but I could see that leading to lumping all and everyone together and equal, where I and others have a more defined and distinctive separation of the two. |

This subject should probably be discussed elsewhere but I would say that IMO the concept and overuse of DR has had a significant role in the repertoire of the "new" performers.
Put who you want into that grouping but that would not be my taste and I think it's time to move on from its overuse. In terms of myself I've always been open about what I do and what I like. To cite one example I'm a big Marc Spelmann fan when it comes to UK performers - very clever classic ideas that are hard hitting with a fun presentation. He also seems to exude an elegant humbleness that feels grounded and likable.

I have a huge dislike for things such as DR and think they have been done to death. In fact I will also throw out a thought, I think many peoples have used DR as a method needlessly just because it is popular and 'trendy' to do so.

I agree. Back to Ross' lecture it just shows how classic methods and approaches never go out of style. They are foundational. I remember when S. Thief, BFs, chair tests, book tests all were trendy. I just couldn't wait for them to pass. But this stuff today, DR, stooging, etc. I could really care less if it passes or not. They can have it. My only problems is the affect it is having on mentalism and its longtime performers.
There does seem to be a lot of unnecessary process and layers to this stuff today. The old "why run when you're not being chased" seems to have come back into application with much of this as well. I also think many of these guys prefer to perform for themelves and other performers than real audiences. A lot of one-upsmanship and chestpounding going on there. |

That's surprising Brett, Buddy/Bud originates from the US...
I think you're coming off a little 'sensitive' ... It's simply a term from friend

This is one of the best lectures I've seen. Eminently well-reasoned thinking, presentation, and some great storytelling. Much more value than, in ignorance, I'd expected to find. I'll be coming back to this one.

I enjoyed this lecture very much.
Especially the fact that he really takes his time with the mind reading and that he plays for real. His blindfold routine is just superb! |

This was the best Live Lecture Penguin ever produced! So incredible, if Ross decided to do a follow up with his Q&A it would be epic. I only hope Weber would be the one to moderate.
