At 99% of the gigs I do my customer wants to hide the check/cash payment from others when handing it to me. Why is that so?

Because it's tacky to pay a performer in front of everyone.

I agree. It's tacky and consider that many folks will not want anyone who is a guest to know how much was paid to the performer any more than someone with any class will go about noting now expensive the drinks were. It's just not cool.
Frankly, I hated to be paid if someone at the gig could see it happen. I felt uncomfortable for any number of reasons.

Picture it- The guy finishes his act and the host comes up to the front, leads the applause, thanks the performer and says, "Here's your fifty bucks."

I have asked the host/hostess not to pay me openly in front of the audience.
It would certainly be less Magical for the Kids to see money exchanging hands at a Birthday Party. On the other hand, I have thanked the Friends of the Library for sponsoring my Show (although I did not receive the check in front of the Audience). I know this seems like a contradiction, but there you go. -Mary Mowder |

I solve the problem by never charging
but, if I were planning to charge I would like it in advance.

Parties need to just flow. Nobody wants to watch for be set up, bars be set up and so forth. Guests do not need to see you paid.
Mike those might not be true of kids parties but as you do more you will learn.

For a company Christmas party, I once had an introduction by the company boss that went something like this...
"OK, now we're going to have our entertainment. His name is Michael Baker, and I think he has a few tricks up his sleeve... so here you go...." I came on to some applause, and just as I reached center stage, the same guy interrupts and says, "Oh, and Michael... when you're done, go see Bernice over there in the red dress and she'll pay you."
