Hello everyone,
I am planning to go to UK this July to do bar magic (busking), I have a lot experience performing close up magic but never in UK and never "passing the hat". if you are from that area I would really like to learn from your experience and also would appreciate your advise about cities/specific areas where this style of performance can work. Thank you Dimitri |

Bars (mostly pubs) don't have the culture of tipping that other places do.
Busking here is done out on the streets. |

I daresay in London's West End, or other big cities, you could get by performing to people who are sitting outside bars and so on, and passing the hat, but it's unusual and I'm not sure you'd make a lot. There are a few places where you can build a crowd, but you might be moved on by the police and the established places - like Covent Garden - either have licensed regulated slots, or it's enforced by the performers themselves. As Elwood said ^ bars and pubs don't really have a tipping culture. I'd love to see more magic on the streets - despite the difficulties, it's got to be worth a try.

Covent Garden in London is probably one of the most well known for Busking although I do believe a License is required.

There was a guy busking moving between small groups of drinkers standing outside pubs in Borough Market the other night, ACR, Omni deck etc.
It's not really a thing that I've seen before in London though - you could do a lot of work for little reward. |

As far as I am aware Covent garden requires you to get a license / audition to work "magicians corner". I've seen people working around the southbank before near the London Eye and also at tower hill and on London bridge but not sure whether or not a license is required for these locations.
In terms of bars; you may pick up a few quid moving around groups but I think it'd be a very hard sell because as others have said; we don't really have a tipping culture in bars and I'm not convinced the bar owners would all be onboard with it. Good luck |
