I got Sal's Shell DVD and I really enjoyed it. It was about a 35 minute DVD with another 8 to 10 in bonus material. It was very straight forward and very easy to learn and understand. Gave some great ideas how to put together a routine. I enjoyed Bob Kohlers from an entertainment standpoint a little more as something one might do as part of a magic routine, but Sal's was very enjoyable. I think he's routine fits more if you really want to try and play with your gambling buddies or a wanna bet proposition.
One of the things I like is he explains the three type of people/personalities you are likely to perform for (the one who picks by what he sees, one who goes against his gut, and one that is familiar with shells) and he tells you how to deal with each one. Honestly it isn't a long DVD, but I think it covers everything I need. Didn't really have a "Gee I wish I learned that" deal. Only one thing I would have liked to see more of was the "on street" demonstrations. Those were fun cause they show you how people respond to certain moves and situations. I didn't get the monte cause I have Daryl's and School For Scoundrels, and didn't feel I needed to learn anything else. By the way, I think School For Scoundrels is the best monte video. Just wish it was on DVD. |

I also enjoyed Sal's 3 shell dvd. The use of an upturned cardboard box and some rather tacky looking shells made it more like the real world. The routine was not great as holytoledo36 says, relying on the spectator challenge ("which one is the pea under?") which I personally do not like as it makes the helper look foolish. Having said that Sal gives you more than your money's worth in methods and tips - certainly more than other videos/dvds I have seen. However, there is still one method of loading and removing that I have not seen tipped anywhere on DVD/video which is the one I use - See Harrison Carroll's "Three Shell Book" for more information. Sal even tips the bottle caps routine with plastic caps, a bit of old rubber and a newspaper. There is an important difference in the way the caps are handled but, as Sal points out, it isn't really a magical effect but rather a street scam. I enjoyed his warnings at the end NOT to try this out on the street - but what respectable magician would try to use it to make money I do not know (well, maybe that one in the mask!).
Good value for money and enjoyable! Martin |

Well I thought it was a good routine in the ideas he gives...more the tools to put it together...but as I pointed out, from a magical or "entertainment" standpoint, I preferred Bob Kohler's Golden Shells routine. Like I said, it seems like Sal is teaching us how to take money from our friends. He even tips us on how to use a confederate if someone puts the money on the right card. It's one of those, for entertainment purposes (wink, wink)

HolyToledo, if you haven't seen Piacente's Monte, I highly reccommend it. Sure Scholl for Scoundrels has one, and there are others I've watched too, but Piacente's Monte has tons of information, the quality is superior to most DVDs, and he's teaching us from REAL experience. Of course it isn't shot like a magic routine, the mood fits the origin of the game...on the streets. Check it out.
