About two weeks ago I was allowed to d a little okito work for the church play reading group. They loved it and I enjoyed the experience immensely. While I love my Buddha boxes, this has sparked my interest in getting a fairly comprehensive set of matching boxes that accept expanded s****s. I am looking for a set that includes Okito, Boston, Slot, and Star. I would prefer they be of solid brass and matching lids. However if such a set would cost much more than $225 I could accept aluminum and 2 lids.

What's a "star" box? I've never heard of that type before for coin work. A search of the Café turns up only this post and one that's unrelated.
But to answer your question, I believe if you look for a "Roth Set" of boxes, they will include the first three and be sized to fit an expanded shell. |

The "slot" or "slotted" box is actually a Star coin box. These two are one in the same and as people did not know this as Roth started making this popular it was most commonly called a slot box.
Generally the type of box that was made for the use of an expanded [ were the Jim Z boxes. Roth' s first runs were made by him many years ago. You can contact Daytona magic as I believe they might have them still. But I believe David's boxes are being made by Roy now. Jim's boxes were great because he made them a bit larger which made them much nicer to work with. It not only made them expanded [ friendly but also could make a bit of a rattle when the box was full. Plus he did not lacquer them so they would "patina" much more evenly. This meant the brass would not develope dark spots as easily if it was cared for properly. _ |

Definitely check with Craig Ousterling who is on this board. He makes some of the nicest boxes you'll see.

The descriptions of star and slot boxes are so similar, but never having owned either I wasn't certain if the working principle was the same. I also guess the older boxes with an actual slot carved/cut are no longer being made. if so, it is a shame I used to have a lot of fun with those . having someone place coins in the box and have them put the lid on while it was in your hand and then taking it from you hand and putting on the table showing it completely empty in the next second always was a good one for me. Unfortunately after I accidentally stepped on and crush two boxes my folks bought me in rapid succession I haven had another since. I've seen both what I just described and a star box both being called slot boxes at one time . Thus Until your responses to my above query I was a bit in the dark about the naming conventions for these two different boxes. So all this begs the question, what is the name for the kind of box I described above?
But yes the list I am really wanting is the Okito,Boston, and Star/slot boxes. If anyone knows where I can get another "slit box" (for lack of the proper term)I would really appreciate the info. PS. The old "slit" boxes were out of fairly thin metal painted black and they were crushed by me because in my childhood I wasn't one to tidy my room much so when I came home from school with my magic tricks on the floor whatever my clodhopper feet stepped on would break if they had any form of fragility. Thank goodness I take much better care of my magic apparatus as an adult. |

Not familiar with the "slit box", but I have a nice set of three boxes, half dollar size, from Jim Zee (Okito, Boston, Slot). They are very nice, but don't think they are available anymore except for used. Of course they last forever ... You may want to post a request on the trading thread.
Wish I had dollar size, since I use Morgans more often now :-( Hudson |

Roth had said the slot was an old idea.

Daytona magic does indeed hold the rights to the Jim Zachary boxes now. For whatever reason, they don't all show up in their search bar for okito boxes, but if you go through their coin magic category you will find them.
They have what you're looking for as a set. Or you'll see that they carry all those boxes singly, and with various specific features. They also have the plug and small boxes. And they come in half or full dollar sizes. Lots of options! And though I hope to someday get my hands on one of Craig's boxes, the Zee boxes are definitely the only other boxes I'd use as of now. I can't attest to whether or not there has been a difference in craftsmanship since the rights changed hands, as I have only owned mine since the change to Daytona. But I can say they are excellent boxes coming from Daytona magic, and their service is great. Have fun boxing! I'm hooked on okito box work. That's a great deal for the set! Assuming it's still stocked..
Personally I feel I wasn't living until I switched over to dollar size. I prefer the added weight and bulk of them. But we all know when it comes to size preference it gets highly personal. Regardless, that's a great deal if that's what you're after! -Richie Larson |

I don’t think Roth has a dollar size set, but I understand that Jim Zee has great ones.

I've only seen an okito box referred to as a star box here: https://www.vikingmagic.com/product/okito-box-star/
I have one of them, and it's an interesting design.. I also have a Roth set that was made by Roy, that I bought several years ago and it's currently in my bag I carry around for work. mG |

I want a coin box its bottom slot can fit a coin shell.
May I ask what box I should go for? |

@asherfox - Roy Keuppers still makes the Roth boxes. I believe he sells the boxes separate also. Check with him at his website and he'll hook you up with what you're looking for.

just saying... There are old clever items to hold back or add coins from a tray too. Where did the "star" label get set attached to this feature in a coinbox?
...to all the coins I've dropped here
