I'm a complete beginner. (I was also a complete beginner last year when I joined, but my main gig is playwriting and performance art so I haven't really focused on magic specifically. I've renewed my interest as I'd like to add some magic to my repertoire.)
I'm trying to learn very basic card moves, like the double lift. Does anyone have suggestions for videos to watch? I've been watching a few on youtube and I'm working on getting that break but my hands are small and I'm having trouble getting those two cards without making it look obvious. Maybe it just takes practice, but I want to make sure I'm practicing the right thing. Something else that might be holding me back is that most videos are shot right handed and I'm a lefty. |

Im a lefty, cant say that its a problem looking at right handed ppl doing DL, the problem is that most youtube videos isn't that good. If you are looking for a good DVD I like The Double Lift Project from BigBlindMedia. You can buy it as download so you can start looking and learning today

I agree with Timtom. YouTube is definitely not the best place to learn magic. I would recommend investing in a copy of royal road to card magic. With that being said, this double lift tutorial isn't half bad:

I'll definitely put that DVD download on my list! I appreciate that that youtube video shows different ways of obtaining the break - my hand just isn't big enough/strong enough to get the method he calls the pinky count. The deck just feels too inflexible for me to be able to slide the cards past my pinky like that in order to get the first two. Most of the videos I've seen either gloss over the method, or use that one. Some of the alternate methods he shows are a much bigger help.
Hopefully soon I'll be able to make it look convincing. I love card magic, but it's definitely not a "learn in one afternoon" thing. Not that I'm complaining. |

You might want to take a look at Jason England's video course on the Double Lift on Theory11. If I'm not mistaken, if costs $6.95 and it's a more reliable source than Youtube videos. And if you haven't done so yet, but Card College volumes 1 and 2 (the books).

I don't have a video to recommend, but here's a couple of cents to spare. I spent a lot of time developing my double lift. I would think about how I normally turn over one card- In my left hand I hold the deck in mechanic's grip and push off one card to my right and turn it over. So if I wanted to turn over 2 cards and make it look like one, what would I do? I would hold the deck in my left hand in mechanic's grip, push off what appears to be one card to the right and casually turn over the two cards as one.
I'm sure someone has named this method and made a 50 dollar DVD set about it, but I've never seen it and so I basically ditched all the methods for DLs I had seen and worked on doing this over and over and over. I got the idea for getting a slight bevel during the push off from the book Close Up Illusions, by Gary Ouellet. He uses his pinky to get a break after- I don't ever get a break. Pun intended. I just barely push off to get a bevel and after LOTS of practice I can FEEL two cards versus one. I use either my finger tip or the side of my finger to "catch" the cards. I can then casually turn the two over and hold them squared in my mechanic's grip. It's totally natural and looks great. There are no weird turn overs, flips or spins- you are just turning "a" card over. It took lots of practice to get this feel, but I like this DL more than any other I've seen. If anyone knows a source for what I consider "my" DL I'd like to hear it so I can compare notes.

I second the Jason England. He's got a no get ready that with practice is doable. Also you can get Royal Road to Card Magic as an eBook on Amazon for $3 bucks.

I agree with various suggestions above. I think a copy of Royal Road would serve you well. And also I agree that Jason's double lift video is amazing. I have been doing the double lift for 20 years and I got so much insight out of his video and managed to improve what I thought was almost invisible DL.

Here is a tutorial I found for the Push Off Double Lift it is very convincing in front of people even close up but it will require some practice

I agree with Marlo, Royal Road to card magic is a great DVD and you will also learn many other card tricks, sleights etc.

Before learning the push-off DL, getting a break is the easiest way, and it's also surefire, which is why many pros use it rather than the push-off.
The pinky count is tricky. Easiest way to get a break is to have an excuse to spread the cards and catch the break whilst squaring. You can do that in the motion of squaring your control/false shuffle or simply say, "Now you could have chosen any of these cards..." and spread the pack. Learning to do the one handed bevel and break catch with purely the left thumb is good. But also, you could just spread the top few cards in front of the spectator and square without drawing attention to it. The spec won't think anything of it. Actually, it surprises me how many specs don't even both watching my hands. You see, most WANT to be entertained. |

Can I recommend the YouTube channel 52Kards. It's my favourite magic related YouTube channel and it teaches sleights and moves, from beginner to advanced level. It's an invaluable asset. Plus, it's all free!
