Who/where is the go-to place to get high quality, high thread count (i.i., the more opaque the better)?

First off you need to ask this question in the correct manner. What you are intending to use silks for? Ruth Rice has the finest printed silk around but may not fit the need you have. Bob Sanders sells very good silks but they are on the thinner side (more opaque). I make my own silks primarily solids and tie dye with some hand painted work. Bottom line it all depends what you want them for.
Silk is measured in momme weight. Most magic shops carry 5 momme (thin). 6 momme is thin but takes the wear better pushing it poking into tight spaces. 8 momme is heavier more opaque used for hand painting, twentith Century and Blends. 12 mm can be used for twentieth century also or sympathy silks. I make all four sizes. If you are looking for Opaque silks for coins you can use gentleman's pocket squares. I also have some good fabric that handles like silk but is more opaque. Hope this helps. Dave, everything that Richard Hughes wrote is 100% accurate. His own work is immaculate as well! If you have someone who can do nice flat hem stitching, you can buy the fabric in LA (aren't you still based here?) at great prices from Oriental Silk in West Hollywood on Beverly Blvd. He has an incredible array of colors and weights.

As Richard mentions, different makers / vendors can all supply you with high quality, but in each case... what is high quality for one purpose may not be ideal for another.
If you are looking for opaque silk scarves and compressibility is not a deciding factor, you might consider other weaves than "China silk' (which is a term used to describe the 6 or 8 momme weight fabric that is used for dress linings outside of magic.)... such as Habotai (actually the same weave as China silk, but heavier and more opaque) those interested can read this for a partial listing: http://info.fabrics.net/fabric-facts/glo......-weaves/ or this: http://blog.patra.com/2010/10/13/the-dif......of-silk/

I find it impossible that I might have led Dick Oslund to some area of magic related knowledge that he isn't familiar with! Consider me stunned!
That is what keeps Dick 'in the game' and still young.... wanting to learn new things all the time. My hat (should I eve get one) is off to you... SIR!

Can you help me with this? Dealers tend to only go to 18 inch, and that is too small for me. I stopped using the gimmicked version of 20th century silks years ago. Performing it with ungimmicked silks let's you use any size silks you want. I use 24 inch silks all the time.

Yup!
The late Harold ("Three Trick")Taylor, lectured at Magic Inc. in Chicago, about 1970. --and! He did more than three tricks!!! He "got" me with a fine variation with the C&R Rope, and, he also showed us a very neat "fold" which made an ungimmicked 20th C. Silks, not only possible, but PRACTICAL! I've used "Harold's fold" almost exclusively, since. I especially like it because the "rainbow" silk, although loading it needed slightly longer, and, a flat surface to lay the load silk on, caused less wrinkling of the rainbow. I still use 18" silks, because I use the Burling Hull, "Elusive" silk vanish with a TT, (I HATE "Change Bags") On days when I had four shows booked, and miles to travel on the jump, I would use the old standard method. My set up time for the 45 minute program is/was max. four minutes, and, THAT, only because I like doing a few silk tricks. (flash! color! time!) I also carried duplicates of the 20th C props on extremely tight scheduled days. Frank Ducrot's "concept" (20thC) has stood the "test" of time! It meets all of my criteria, and, it's so strong, it's next to closing for the elementary school kids. My routine, although it accomplishes the same basic effect, is not the,"I'll now make the rainbow scarf disappear, and reappear tied between the scarves that are knotted together." ("SURPRISE" IS A MAJOR FACTOR IN ENTERTAINMENT"!) You can see several dozen YUKKY DEMONSTRATIONS (definitely NOT PERFORMANCES) of Frank's great CONCEPT, on You Tube! (NO SURPRISE, and, IMO, NO ENTERTAINMENT!)

Yup! Each of the "BIG FOUR" SILK MERCHANTS, has a 'specialty'. Harold RICE'S daughter has the "picture" and, design silks, Richard HUGHES produces beautiful solid color "specialties" like Fountain of Silks, etc. Bob Sanders has top quality silks, and produces a much improved, "THIS", plus REAL "Diamond Cut" silks. Jonathan Neal, makes first class specialty silks and "silks" for routines like what is known as "Slydini" Knots, etc.
Magic effects that use silks as props, pack small and play big. They're light weight, and add great eye appealing color!

Momme is ONLY a measure of MASS, not quality or opaqueness. All silk fibers are the same size. Therefore, the usual method of increasing momme is to make a looser weave! That has its own set of problems for durability. As the silk importer, I can often get 8 momme silk cheaper than 5 momme silk. (I avoid them.) Personally, I only use 5 momme silk and my mentor was Harold Rice. His were 6 momme because it was illegal to import the better Chinese silk during his lifetime. Look on page 8 of the Rice Encyclopedia where he tells you that the China silk is best. He could not get it then. The best Japanese silk was 6 momme. (Now I even send 5 momme silk from China to Japan for the pros!) Life has its secrets. LOL

Harold used Japanese silk. The funny part is that most of the silk cocoons were from China and manufactured in Japan.
