Hi, I have a son who is a pretty advanced (I think!) 11 year old as far as his interest in magic goes. He does mostly card tricks and he is currently reading Tamariz's memorized stack book. He would like another book and I want to get one that will not be too dry and text book like. He has mentioned Card College and I am wondering if this is a good choice for an 11 year old. He loves card tricks but he is also interested in mental magic and he is open to exploring. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Card College, vol 1 & 2, is an excellent choice!
Despite the name of the series, it starts with how to open a deck of cards, how to hold a deck, how to care for your hands. Very basic. The advantage of Card College series over other well-known books, in my mind, is that the material is consistent and builds on prior material in the series. You learn in vol 1 how to hold a deck and shuffle the cards in a consistent manner so later on, say vol 4 or 5, you don't have to make a significant change in your handling to execute more difficult slights. Thank you so much! I forgot to mention that he has the Card College DVDs- I think they cover up to volume 3 and he says he wants more advanced stuff (but I'm not really sure he knows what he's talking about ;-)). I may just get him the whole card college series. I think I read here somewhere that Harry Lorayne has a book that covers card magic as well as other magic. Does anyone know what that would be? And which of his books would anyone recommend for my son? I have read a lot of posts for book recs but they are dated a long time ago and I know a lot of these books have gone out of print. Based on what is available today, would anyone be able to recommend a couple of other books that cover card as well as mental magic?
Thank you!! |

I own the entire 5 vol. card college set, and it is fantastic! I am not sure how serious your son is, but I think card college should work. HOWEVER, (this is a BIG however) it is very easy to become overly fascinated with complicated moves, and not perfect the ones you should. So, I recommend you only give him book 2 after he finishes 1! You see, card college is meant to be a course. "You can only go as high as your foundation is wide!".
Hope it helps! |

I also have the entire 5 volume Card College series and the two-DVD set (covers vol 1&2).
There is much more content in the books than the DVD. I recommend the first two books only at this time. If you want, get the other volumes and you can give them as gifts over time. Alternatively, you can get the first two books (vol 1&2) and then add other "trick" DVDs or books - Harry Lorayne Best Ever DVD set, Doc Eason Card Under Glass DVD, or any of another of a number DVDs or books. Again, the first two volumes of Card College would give your son a foundation that woukd last a life time. Wish I had these when I was young. Hudson |

I agree with the "Card College" books (and I too wish they were around when I was younger). The detail is really good, the writing is quite clear. If possible, I'd get the entire series (at least 1 through 4). Some of it builds on previous material (the DLs, for example - that's spread somewhat throughout the series), but most of it can be learned at any time, without actually working progressively through the volumes.

If he likes mental magic and mentalism he might like 13 Steps to Mentalism by Corinda some parts are long but it has a lot of information on the subject.

Thank you very much. I really appreciate all the help and time you all have given me. My son is looking forward to the Card College and I think I will also try something from Harry Lorayne and maybe even the Mentalism by Corinda.
I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks |

That is great to have a support system when starting out and new to magic(or anything else). I think maybe a local group is a good time investment.
Society of American Magicians and The International Brotherhood of Magicians Books and Videos are great but personal interaction is a great learning tool you will not get from those sources. Magic is a performance art.... yes at some level it is an exhabition of skill but that 'skill' is wrapped in an artful presentation. So it becomes really not about what you but how you do it. |

If he's into cards and wants to delve into mentalism I strongly suggest the "mind mysteries volume 2" DVD by Richard Osterlind.
It teaches the bcs Stack and very very powerfull effects using the stack. It's not a book though. |
