In this one here, a girl wanted her friend to show me a card trick so I said let me show you mine first ... what amazes me about this clip is the number of people watching me show this one person a magic trick ... being as how I'm now partially blind I wasn't aware of how many people were actually watching me at the time.

It's amazing to me what you guys consider a "show." Guess we have different definitions.

A full-length formally structured performance in front of an audience where the audience is addressed and experiences the performance as a whole. Presented to usually a paying or invited audience there for the purpose of being entertained.
This is far different from a casual, brief presentation or demonstration for unsuspecting or ambushed people not intending or expecting to be entertained. Also any any skilled performer should know, simply stringing several tricks together is also not a show. There is no premise, theater, foundation or many other theatrical elements as typically found in a "show." You may be quite good at what you do but it's quite improper and misleading to claim them as shows, as in "I perform 20 shows a day." Typically a standardly accepted show (not in magician's world) as in theater, plays, movies, concerts, stage, musical, etc. is typically between 45 minutes (at very minimum) to more like 60, 75 or 90 minutes, sometimes more, usually with production. Next time I return to the Palace Theater in Myrtle Beach, I will happily invite you to my "show." |

Yes. Not everyone buys into your narrow definition of a show. Street performers do shows.

At Mark Wilson's lecture he talked of doing a short show repeatedly over and over and over again at the World's Fair ... there is no time limit on a "show" - the high horse you ride is a child's sized broomstick with a pink pony head attached to one end. Here is footage from last night, Heather is my camera girl and she has a bachelors degree in broadcasting ... she will be filming me all summer and even I don't know what she will end up doing with the footage - going to be an exciting summer! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNEvK-UXykY -JoeJoe

Sorry but verything you said or referred to is incorrect.
I never said "So the only people that should be able to witness my magic are people that can afford to "pay" for a ticket?? God Forbid - that is obscene!!" That may be what you understood it as but not at all what I said. Also you are incorrect about Vaudeville shows. They were full-lengths shows consisting of multiple short "acts," "demonstrations" or "performances." Together they combined to create a "show." Yes, when doing fairs and festivals it is possible to do "shows" usually on the grandstand or mainstage or in a feature stage or tent, but there are also shorter repeated performances and demonstrations which is likely what Mark was referencing. (Again, a magic reference) I get calls every day at my agencies to book shows and not once in 40 years have any of them ever even thought of or considered such things you are describing as a "show." As I said only in certain segments of the magic community is this misconception even considered or used. If someone called you up (well maybe not you, lol) and said "lets go see a show tonight" they are not thinking of or referring to what you demonstrated in your videos. They are referring to some type of a full-length entertainment event. Glad to educate you, but sorry you are seem to have difficulty understanding or interpreting what I am saying. |

I don't see a problem with calling street shows shows. He has been there a long time and on the boardwalk that is what is expected from him.
No it is not the same as a theatrical presentation of a show. It doesn't matter as it is not what is being claimed, or at least shouldn't be.

Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed watching the cups and balls. Looks like the final lime load got a good reaction!
As for as semantics are concerned, I agree that these are short street performances and not "shows" |

The official dictionary definition of "show": To cause or allow to be seen.
What you guys are referring to in a theater is more of a "play" or "production". Yes, what I am doing is not the same as what you are doing - but I assure you I am the one using the correct word. My "As Seen On TV: The JoeJoe Magic Show" is a forty minute production divided into three acts that I have been doing locally for years now including a four month run in my own close-up theater I setup at the mall last season and was featured on the cover of the local rag. This project is titled "Boardwalk Magic" ... Heather has been learning my routines and now knows where to focus the camera when and this great footage from last night where you really see the pencil melting through the bill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ojgybR0gKA And here is me going old school and leaving the comfort of the table to roaming magic like I did on the boardwalk in Ocean City twenty some years ago, about a decade before anyone knew who David Blaine was: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=th981Xq_5Ms -JoeJoe

If your definition of show is "to be seen," then yes you're a putting on a show. By that definition, UFO's have been putting on shows in California for years

"you wanna see a trick kid ... I'll SHOW you a MAGIC trick" ... show magic ... magic show ... this is basic English, ya'all need to go back and get your GEDs.
Here is a great show from last night featuring some great interaction with a little girl who thought my handkerchief trick was "gross" ... worth watching to the end to catch the cups-n-balls reset. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xki9muUiyT8 -JoeJoe

Here is another great show from the other night - a kid tells Heather it's just science so she sends him up to the table to witness my magic for himself ..... a two trick build (Misled and silk hanky) into cups and balls blows him away, great reactions from the crowd:

Here is a show for Brani, some chick from a hot rod magazine - she was very enthusiastic:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XZz7tfuSO0 And here is another good set, great job on cups and balls ... notice how at two and half minute mark I position the two balls together so the third ball lands on them and literally "rolls out" when I lift the cup saying "make it harder, stack all three cups" ... that takes practice, I don't get it every time but it is always fun when I try to do it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n20I4MDZdfI -JoeJoe

Great set for the future leader of mankind:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPrI-irPQJU And here is a clip from last night ... the little girl on the right looking under the table had already seen the show twice and was "determined to catch me" ... great panoramic of the crowd at the end: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2heLsJxrYRY -JoeJoe

In this clip I had just finished a show and was going free-style with the cups ... something I'm working on using shell-game style moves to create a magic illusion of balls transpositioning ... when a little girl drops something in the hat so I go ahead and start-up a new show.
So these kids have basically already seen the show once, the kid that was "George" in the last show boldly proclaims "I'm George" causing me to chuckle and break character for a brief moment - I love what I do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLPIErXocW0 -JoeJoe
