Simon Pierro is a genial magician who enjoys his work greatly, and while he started out as a “normal” magician, he now works almost exclusively with iPads and electronic devices, including iPhone apps. You probably saw Simon when he appeared on Ellen DeGeneres’s TV show. Denis Behr, the other-worldly cardman from Germany who likes to drink beer and bake, attempts to capture what makes Simon tick; he teaches a trick involving an iPhone and Simon also gives away his app “Magic Wipe” free to all Genii readers.
Associate Editor Dustin Stinett and ace photographer Kari Hendler attended the 48th Annual Academy of Magical Arts Awards Show on May 15 and bring you the details of the Dale-Salwak produced extravaganza that is so much a part of our world each year. Congratulations to all the winners, and particularly to our own Tom Stone for being given a Creative Fellowship, and of course the inestimable Ton Onosaka who received the Lifetime Achievement Fellowship. Even our ex-editor, Ms. Erika Larsen, received a special Award of Merit. I think everyone has been waiting a long time for a Penn & Teller magic set. It just seemed like something we all wanted. Their TV show Fool Us presented them with the opportunity to make that a reality, and the “Penn & Teller Fool Everyone Magic Kit” has just arrived in stores. It’s the opposite of what you may have expected, but that’s a purposeful choice and I highly recommend it for young magicians. Interview with Teller and more details this month. “The Eye” returns this month with Todd Karr bringing you four pages of interesting and little known titbits about magic from around the globe. If you read “The Eye” on the digital edition of Genii, then there are multiple links under each bit to add even more to the experience. * “The Chamber of Secrets” reveals to us messages from beyond courtesy of John Gaughan’s Crystal Bell. * In “Cardopolis” David Britland peers into the past and sees something from Billy O’Connor—a card trick! * Lingering in the British Isles for another few pages, we come across Bob Read’s “Hidden Treasures,” which offers a fascinating glimpse into a heretofore unknown image of … the father of modern magic. * David Kaye’s new column paradoxically titled “Don’t Read This!” is this month’s “Expert at the Kids’ Table”; Dr. Kainoa Harbottle is in one of his philosophical moods this month, preaching the wonders of “Pugilism and Coin Magic” as exemplified in Professor Hoffmann’s book Conjurer Dick. No Joke. “By Means of Metal”; Harrison Greenbaum thinks we “Are All Terrible” and insists that we CREATE!; In “Left-Handed” Jeff Prace goes for the cherry drink; Four tricks from Andi Gladwin in “Magicana” this month (and I should point out that “The Hole Trick” will injure your friends’ minds); The latest from The Magic Castle comes your way from Daniel Ulin; John Guastaferro sings his swansong as our book reviewer before returning in November as the new editor of “Magicana”; Dustin Stinett reviews John Carney’s new video and the Pat Page Audio Archive, while David Regal plows through an enormous pile of tricks just for your pleasure.
