Congrats. Good luck.
So I am curious: How large are the class sizes? How many lecture (and/or lab) hours per week? How do you plan to teach these students? (I mean will you use black/whiteboards, power-point, flipped classroom, etc.)

I expect that I'll be in a classroom with a whiteboard. That'll be ideal. Generally I do two things in the classroom: 1. Sit on the instructor's table and chat with the students. (It's more of a chat than a lecture.) 2. Write examples on the whiteboard. I expect the students to read the section(s) I'm going to be covering before they arrive in class. I discuss/explain the important points of the section(s) and give examples of the techniques. I expect the students to take notes on what I discuss, and on what I write. (If they want to snap pictures of what I write, that's OK, too.) We'll have a quiz every day that we don't have an exam; that encourages them to keep current on their studying. |

If it works out in your favor chance favors the prepared mind. If it works out for the other guy he got lucky.

Apparently I've done something right at Chapman.
According to the math department admin the department chair told her explicitly to make sure that I would be teaching there in the Spring. Today, she asked me to choose my classes for the Spring; apparently I got first choice of the first-semester calculus classes (one of my favorite classes to teach). I got 11:00AM and noon, MWF, much better than 9:00 MWF and 2:30 MW: my schedule this Fall. This is weird. Today, one of my 2:30 students told me that I'm a legend. This is even weirder. |

You're a legend here, so why shouldn't you be a legend there?
(BTW: do you think you could use your new connections to get me a job there, too?) |

Wonderful news and wishing you all the best. Calculus always put fear into my heart so I admire your talent.

I can teach ANYTHING. Except for math.
LOL! But I would have passed on the presidency. I know nothing about administration. So: math and administration are out. Anything else would be OK for me. I could also work in the Caféteria. Gotta go now. I'm attending a new professor's inaugural lecture. He's been here for two years, but he's now officially a "Professor". Germany is a bit...well...tight about these kind of things. |

Alternative medicine? I can do that. I can even dance alternative medicine.
It would be so frigging cool to live in California. It's cold outside where I live. Cold, I tell you. Kinda like Canada. |

An interesting development:
Last week at Long Beach State the chair of the Accountancy department (apparently calling it the Accounting department doesn't carry the requisite panache) told me that I won't be getting any classes there in the Spring. There was a full-time professor who was supposed to be retiring, then decided that she wasn't; naturally, the two classes that she wants to teach are exactly the two I'd have been teaching. So, I was down to the two calculus classes at Chapman University: not really enough to sustain the lifestyle. Well, earlier this week I got an e-mail from a gentleman at Cal State Fullerton asking if I would like to teach a statistics class . . . on the days I'm not at Chapman. Cool! Today he e-mailed me to ask if I would like a second such class. Cooler still! So now I have four classes in the Spring, all at universities that are a heck of a lot closer to me than Long Beach State, and all math classes (which are a lot more fun to teach than accounting . . . oops! . . . accountancy classes). Pretty . . . you guessed it! . . . cool! |
