Yikes. Their review of Tony Karpinski's wonderful TV Card Frame was blissfully ignorant. I love these guys but a simple Google search would show that the plexi was put in at the wrong angle...
https://www.google.com/search?q=TV+Card+......bih=1022 Plus, Karpinski's woodwork is well-respected, and those who know what they are buying understand the price they are paying. It's not too much. I'm very glad WPR are reviewing larger props like this, but they should do some more homework...especially when they are unfamiliar with the maker, or the prop. And while I love the idea of a live show, the production quality of this episode was like watching a illegal copy of a 1980's VHS tape. I need to take some meds after going into shock thinking I went back in time. All that aside, I hope they take this as constructive criticism. The boys have saved me a lot of money over the years - and helped me spend my money the right way - so I will keep faithfully watching every episode. Keep up the great work.

Wizard, the plates were put in correctly, but they did not put the other rubber band on from corner to corner. This model does hold the plates as they placed them. Mak Magic's model hold them by the corners only.
Yes, they really should read the instructions before touching the prop. They said, they thought they knew how it was suppose to be, then did not bother to put both rubber bands on. I myself wondered why they sounded like they were in the back room of a bar. I noticed they did not have their usual camera man there. And this is suppose to be their new studio just for the show being videoed. Puzzlement abounds for the onlookers. |

Bill, as they say, you've forgotten more about magic than I'll ever know, so I'm not pushing back regarding the placement of the plates. I have a collection of about 7 or 8 TV Card Frames and they all function better with the plates placed point down. There are those that do have the plates sitting square as my link shows, and my prop from Tony was purchased slightly used without instructions, so I can't attest to the proper placement of those plates. Personally, I prefer the diamond display when the plates are placed askew because it creates the illusion that the plates are just barely being supported by the frame. When they sit square, it's clear that they are being supported by the frame and for me at least, more suspect if the viewer has any inkling of the method.
But Bill, you summed it up perfectly. No matter what the configuration of the plates are, if the bands aren't put on properly, the effect is subject to failure. PLUS, they failed to mention the routine. As they portrayed it (for those not in the know), this was just an expensive wooden stand for a card to appear. NO! Presented with some drama where the cards are thrown at the frame, falling all over the place, and the card appears between two pieces of bound "glass," the prop is awesome. Again, I am not piling up on David and Sean. I think they are doing a great job. And I admire them reviewing a prop out of their comfort zone as it does them credit. They just need to do a bit more homework.

I just bought this from MJM magic and can confirm that the official instructions state that the plates should be placed in the diamond formation with one corner pointing down to the base. In fact, the trick WILL NOT WORK in the "square" configuration shown in the promo picture on the website of every company that sells this. That of course raises the question of . . . WTF? Your own promo pic shows the configuration incorrectly?
For clarity, if you try to place the two glass plates in the configuration shown in the promo pic won't work. Why? Because the two "guides" within the frame do not match up unless the glass is placed in a diamond configuration. OK. Let's put that issue aside. Now onto a real review. The "hidden" card is visible in the trick as delivered. What???? Exactly. You can literally see the edge of "hidden" card when placed in the trick as delivered. I had to go to my tool bench and make some modifications so that the card is not clearly visible when loaded into the default frame. And guess what? When you make the needed modifications, the card is now visible from the BOTTOM of the frame when loaded. Why? Because the frame was built with essentially not enough space for normal sized playing cards. Okay, putting all of that aside, you can still use the illusion in a parlor setting You have to be VERY careful with your angles, but it can work. That is, if you play LOUD music during the card reveal. Why? Because the gimmick is VERY LOUD. For me, this is not a big deal because I perform in a parlor setting and can crank up the music. But no way this can be don with anything close to close-up. It would be like, "and now, look at the frame," KERKLAAAAANG. Wow, a card appears. Amazing, right? So bottom line, disappointed in the craftsmanship and design. But it is useable in a parlor setting with modifications upon arrival (get our your wrenches and get ready to start bending). Feel free to PM me with any other questions. |
