Team,
I did a quick search for creating a "bloody nose" effect. I recently watched Stranger Things, a TV series and the little girl in the show would perform telekinesis or clairvoyance/astral projection and she would get a little bit of a bloody nose. I thought to myself... now that would be epic to do, to really sell an effect. perform a PK illusion or even mind reading and then all of a sudden your nose bleeds a little (due to the mental strain). And you would say something like, "Sorry guys, that sometimes happens" When I did a search, the ideas I got were "blood capsules" or a tube that went from your mouth through your throat into your nostril... break your skin with a fingernail. The fingernail and tube through nostril is a bit much for me. The capsule seems perfect, but wouldn't that cause your voice to sound nasal and high pitched? Has anyone tried this out? Had any experience with it? Recommend any ideas? Thank you! |

What about frozen "blood". Put a small blood icecube in a nostril and let it melt...

Hmmm, interesting idea. Do you think the ice cube would be too cold in the nose?
I was also thinking, after performing the effect, to begin acting like you have a bloody nose, quickly look for a tissue, then pull a tissue out of your pocket (hide the fake blood on it) and put it up near your nose real quick. Then slowly move it away, then reveal the fake blood on it. Probably not as dramatic as actually seeing the blood come out of your nose, but it still would leave an impression. What do you guys think? thank you Curator! |

Must try. But the nice think is that you can freeze real blood in case of.

Very cool idea Wollomby. I've never heard of this or seen it in the magic community, but I'm still relatively new to the bizarre realm. Curator's idea is sound, but the discomfort may be too distracting, and the timing would be difficult to control (body temperature...room temperature...gravity).
I'm wondering if there is a prosthetic solution, like a small flesh colored sack that could be adhered to the inside of one nostril. It need only contain a drop or two of fake blood. So that's crazy...and to add to that, let's say you have a small needle affixed to your little finger (I am thinking of something similar to a certain mentalist gimmick here), reach up to scratch your nose and boo-yah. Blood begins to slowly drip. Not the most elegant solution. But it's all I got right now.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

There was a stigmata routine awhile back (paper crane productions?) in which a person could produce blood spontaneously from the eyes and/or hands. The appearance of bloody tears after an effect was on the demo, and people were genuinely concerned ("uh... are you... okay..?" etc.)
Surely it could be used for the nose also..? A quick Café or google search would yield results I think. |

I believe John Riggs discussed this idea years ago, either in one of his books or on one of his DVDs

Found the one I was talking about. It was called Wounded, by Robert Smith. Here it is:

I've never thought of this before. I just started watching the series and haven't gotten that far into it yet.
Great idea though. Thanks for sharing. |
