Hi there!
I'm a twelve years old beginner magician from the Middle Europe and my dad just told me that his friend is going to have a wedding in late August. He said I may perform there, but... I never performed at such a big event! Any advice? |

I think back to some of my performances when I tried similar situations when I was 12,13,14 and I always did not put in enough practice and made the performances TOO BIG I really wanted to do A LOT of magic and really what ended up happening is I did a few things just ok and the rest not so good.
So some simple advice....practice practice practice and just do a few things.... maybe the ones you are really good at so far. But give some more specifics about what you are wanting to do and what you may be thinking and I think you will get more responses on here. You kinda just have a very general question. So what is your best "trick" or the one you get the best reactions out of right now?? |

I think I'm gonna start with the Chicago Opener, it gets great reactions and it's not very difficult so I can focus on presentation.

Great trick you can have a lot of fun with that one....
personally I like to build up to an effect like that one.... start out with something real light just a little mystery then go into something stronger. Are you going to try to walk around and stroll from table to table? or try to entertain the whole room? If you go from table to table look into a small table that you can carry around....maybe you have something at the house. |

If you do the Chicago Opener, for heaven's sake, don't use the "RED HOT MAMA" line!!! It's a great trick, but THAT line is extremely OUT OF DATE, especially inappropriate for a teen ager!
Friend 2 has passed along some good advice! I would emphasize: PRACTICE! Do only a few tricks! Keep your "act" brief--Five minutes!

Thanks Dick, for chiming in also.
I look back to when I was younger everything I did in situations like this should have been scaled down....for me that would have made a huge difference. I stopped performing magic for such a long time. I had this idea in my head that to do "MEANINGFUL" magic I had to somehow do magic in front of a crowd. So I always tried to scale up to that. I always did well with the more close up and smaller settings when I did magic I was well practiced with and attached "stories" or well thought out patter to. I would often tell some stories between tricks or effects and people really seemed to like it. Now I combine the two together and for me It works out great. I also know that making a more one on one connection to the few people I may be showing magic to is very powerful magic and very meaningful. It suits my personality better. Those are probally the best things I have figured out about my magic over the years and wish I could have had that knowlege sooner. |

If you can get a vanishing wine or champagne bottle this is a great trick for weddings.

Just have fun!
Focus on letting your personality shine instead of worrying about doing perfect magic. Grab a few very simple tricks, and just go for it! |

It seems (to me at least) that darn near everyone (mostly newcomers) will tell the OP (not just in this thread) to "JUST HAVE FUN!"
The ENTERTAINER'S "JOB" IS TO "CREATE" F U N, >>>FOR THE SPECTATOR(S)!<<< If the entertainer, KNOWS HIS BUSINESS, HAS THE TALENT, AND, HAS REHEARSED HIS PERFORMANCE, SUFFICIENTLY, HE WILL PROBABLY HAVE FUN PERFORMING. HERE COMES THE "BUT"::: BUT, IF JUST THE PERFORMER IS HAVING FUN, HE WON'T LAST LONG AS A MAGICIAN!

Lukkudlek -- it's late September, so I'm guessing your wedding performance has come and gone. How did it go?
It's still magic even if you know how it's done.

You're right! I wanted to post it sooner, but the school has come and I was quite busy. Anyways, it went really well!
Besides a gag where I've pulled a thumb light from the bride's ear, I only did a few tricks - sponge balls, Chicago opener, a rubber band trick and one more card trick. I messed up on tthis one, but as the bride was showing her card to the rest of the audience, I accidentally saw the card too and used it as a mind reading out when I messed up, but still everybody have noticed that mistake... And nobody really cared about it. Everyone loved the Chicago opener I used as a closer and after the show people came to me and they all said it was awesome(there was around 40 people in the audience). So it went very well. Thanks so much for all those tips and recommendations you gave me. And sorry for my English. I've tried |

Lukkudlek!
Your English is just fine! English is full of "exceptions" in grammar. I think about 18% of our "every day" language is of Anglo-Saxon derivation! (All sorts of irregular spellings, etc.) A good example: By Anglo-Saxon "rules", GHOTI "spells" FISH!!! GH is pronounced like F (in words like "enouGH". O is pronounced like I (in words like "women". (pronounced: wImen. TI is pronounced like SH (in words like "definiTIon". It sounds like you did a "stand up" show for the entire group. --and, you "survived"!!! GOOD!
