I feel if your presentation is tip top, and your attitude is tip top then you should be able to help anyone enjoy there night. Many times we have heard magicians saying "The trick can suck" as long as you presented it in a way that the spectator will enjoy. Such as this, if you have some 20-25 year olds, and there out having a good time, drinking, whatever. You can be a little more loose with some of your stuff, your tricks, the way you act, your tone, ect. You can get a little loud and crazy, they normally like it. Lets say a 70-80 year old couple. There out having a nice night out. You cant go yelling in there face with the not so sweet jokes ect. They will think your a crazy moron and wont think twice about your tricks, they will just want you step back and leave them be. If you treat them like they want to be treated, you can make there night out one to remember.

In the last four dates I have had two jerks at two different events. Both were magic hobbyists. The first one started to follow me around & started to tell my audience his theory of how I was doing the tricks. I took him aside & asked him to please stop as the only thing he was accomplishing was ruining the entertainment value of what his boss was paying me to provide. He then started to approach each group as I moved on to the next group. Again I asked him to stop but could not get cooperation. When nothing worked, I had no choice but to go to my contact with the company. After explaining the problem, I was told not to worry. They took care of it & told me that I would be back next year but he would not. I like to handle things on my own but taking him outside was not an option.
The second hobby magician at a different show did the same thing. As I was working he shouted out to all that could hear what method I was using. This one did not follow as I walked away. He then approached me & wanted to be my magic pal. He actually wanted me to help him with a trick he was working on & wanted to ask me all kinds of questions about my act. He actually was angry when I would not give him the answers to his questions. What is wrong with these people. They think that they are magicians because they purchased a few tricks & have a little inside information. They think it's OK to ruin someones act just so that they can prove their superiority. When you run into someone like that all you can do is walk away. Anything else can cause you to lose the gig. We unfortunatly are always vulnerable to these clods. Even if we use material that they have never seen & have no idea of how it's done, they shout out some method & the only way to prove them wrong is to expose the real method which we won't do. I guess there is no way except to walk away. |
