I just got a set of these shells and I must say they are absolutely perfect.
I've heard of the other ones via advertising but there is really no comparison. They look absolutely real and the size is great. Apparently they were molded from a real walnut shell off of one of only two rare walnut trees. Now for a routine.

Yes, they're excellent - especially if you have large hands. These shells are killer with Bob Sheets' acquitment.
cheers Andrew

Are they completly flat on the bottom? From what I have heard they are. the school for scoundrels shells are slightly curve making the steals and loads extremely easy. With the flat shells it would be a bit more difficult to do the moves on a hard surface.

When talking to Andrew about the "Chanin Dip", these shells could be shaped easily if you insist on working a hard surface. Better to let Whit or Andrew clear things up on this. They're the ones in the know.

I have both the La Maggiore Shells and the School for Scoundrels Shells and I love them both. The S for S shells are better for more intimate presentations whilst La Maggiore are much showier and can be seen by a larger crowd. Both types can be adapted by the user with a bit of sandpaper and colours can also be changed if you don't like them. I have very small hands but have no trouble with the Maggiore shells. I use Method C from Ralph Read's "The Three Shell Game" book for the steal and load. There is also a description of this method in "The Shell Game" routine by Harrison Carroll. I had difficulties with the Bob Sheets move (too much movement for my small hands) but with the steal above you still have the finger and thumb free to turn the shells over without flashing.

I don't want to go so far to say they are self-working, but doing the work with these shells make it very easy. It's obvious Andrew Pinard spent a lot of time developing these.

No offence meant to enthusiasts of the Chanin dip, but it's not missed in the La Maggiore shells - even a monkey can steal a pea from these shells. (I know... even I can do it). I have SFS shells and the Pinard shells and they are both a quality product. For me, the Pinards are more comfortable to use because I have larger hands, but YMMV. I don't agree that one set is for intimate shows and the other is for bigger shows - they both look like real walnut shells, one set larger than the other and they are both fine for close up or parlour.
cheers Andrew Wimhurst PS. Mr. Pinard, you can send me the payoff via Paypal.

I find La Maggiore shells too big for the one handed move. Going to buy some street shells. Agree that La Maggiore work on any surface without Chanin dip.
Posted: Nov 21, 2004 4:06pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My street shells are on order, will let you know how I get on with them in comparison to the Maggiore shells, if anyone cares to know that is.

I second it all. THe shells are absolutely (pun intended) perfect. Andrew is also a fine person and loves magic and performing. I am perfecting a blackeyed pea for use with the shells. It just makes more sense to me!!!

I hear you, Frank. I got a set of the same shells last month and am getting real comfortable with them.
I want to check out Bob Sheets video and a few others and eventually work out my own routine. I have a basic routine learned from the one video I purchased so far (Pat Paige's 3 shell game video). It is good and has a routine on it with some alternate ending ideas and several other utility moves that I have been working on as well. But these things are just so much fun to play around with! The other thing I would really like to make or maybe buy is a nice case to carry them in. I had something in mind like a latching box instead of a pouch. Maybe with a felt covered cardboard layer inside with cut outs that the shells would lay in (hollow side up) and a little depressed well for the peas to rest in perhaps with velcro lid? Just some thoughts. GlenD

I really like the Patrick Page videos.
No nonsense magic that works. The shells video is no exception.

Yes, I heard. I just didn't have anything interesting to reply with at the moment. My appologies. Just some fleeting ideas.
Until I do... I have a very novel idea for a Ninja Rings Holder. Actually 2 ideas. One is quite similar to what's out there now. Just better. The other idea is very new. Did I just hijack this thread? Actually GlenD, that might be a good idea. I'm always worried that shot glass is going to break in my little bag or I might lose the pea.

With the larger shells I use this kind of glass... I hope this helps...

Thanks Curtis!
Frank, if you feel like working on something nice to hold the items, let me know what you come up with. You need a larger than normal shotglass to cover the La Maggiore shells I think. I found something that is working for me for now but I am not completely satisfied with it. GlenD

Andrew sent me 2 glasses to try with the shells.
There's the votif candle holder style. There's the kitchen mini bowl that is part of the nesting glass bowls. It's so small it's hard to call it a bowl but that's what it is. One of the two is called the "finale" glass, I think. I'm not sure which. I'll see what I come up with. If you sketch anything up, email me a jpg of it. Frank

GlenD: Thanks for the kinds words! I looked at supplying a clamshell case similar to what necklaces are packaged in, but the prices were ultimately too high... Search for "wooden jewelry boxes" in google and you will find lots of individual in which to transport your equipment... I particularly like the hand-carved ornate boxes... Most come with a felt lining, or you could cut up an old close-up pad...
Frank: The Finale Glass is the "bowl"... The Pseudo Shot Glass is the glass that looks like a shot glass, but isn't... (And I only have a couple left and don't have a source for any more... Sigh...) All of my equipment is carried about in a kit bag... I transport my shells (three shells and one pea) in the Pseudo Shot Glass which is slipped into my Jim Zee dice cup (which cradles the glass nicely and keeps it from tipping over). It has taken me years to learn how to pack the case in the best manner possible... I might recommend to Frank that he make up a leather straight-sided cup with a drawstring top that you can slip the Pseudo Shot Glass into... He might also consider a small pocket on the outside for extra peas... |
