Does anyone know anything about the effect that Henning did where he throws a mixed up cube into the air and it is solved in mid air before he catches it?
This dates back to 1982 and was wondering if it was ever marketed or published.

Currently, there's two versions of the effect marketed (click highlighted text for links):
1) Daryl's "Enchanted Cube" - this is the version that you're asking about. ...and... 2) Ed Alonzo's "Oral Fix-sational - This is a miniature cube that you solve in your mouth. It uses the same method as the above, but the presentation is different. |

Garrett Thomas also performs a version of this effect, but I don't know if it's the same as Daryl's Enchanted Cube. At his recent lecture in Atlanta he didn't want to reveal it, so it might be different.

I saw Garrett Thomas the other night at a restaurant and he came to my table. One of the effects he performed was with a Rubik's Cube and exactly as you described. I would be very interested in learning more about it if anyone can lead me to a book, etc with more information.

There's no book. It's a prop you need to buy. I've done it for years. As you can imagine, young adults like it more than the kids do.
Another pro who did (stilldoes?) this one if the Amazing Jonathan. |

Jim,
Are you referring to the prop put on the market by Daryl? I saw a few pictures that made it look like the colors did not match the traditional Rubik's Cube (the pictures showed the cube being purple, blue, green, all dark colors). Do the colors match a regular Rubik's cube on Daryl's prop? Evan |

Hmm, I don't know wherefrom that Rubik-cube *trick*/routine originates, I saw a good friend doing it, he let me into the secret and I've done it ever since -with *his* permission-..(around 1984)
Later, I saw it announced at certain dealers place -I recall * The Magic Hands* from Germany, which now are closed down (for quite some time) ans I don't know how many versions do exist.. My guess is, the one I'm doing is *Daryls* -unfortunately I've never seen the late Doug Henning doing it- but the secret is very simple, apart from one has to remember *how* to turn the cubes sides.. Actually it is kind of an unprepared/normal cube (this includes normal colours!), apart from a single side does show disturbed/mixed pattern of colours.. The rest is a clever handling, eg. a preparation beforehand to make ALL sides disturbed, and then turning some sides a couple of times, whilst the front side still shows disturbed pattern, throwing it into the air, aso. Result is a perfect assemblet cube apart from one ****. That's it..well, I assume the idea is Daryls, he's clever enough to have invented it.. It always plays well, even if the Rubik Cube by now is an oldie and probably not too well known by youngsters.. Well, it is a perfect trick do do in any stand-up situation, can be instantly reset, and I think it even would play well in the street...not too many tricks fullfill the same requirement.. Only thing that is YOUR job, is how to *turn* the sides/sequences..some might call it selfworking, but IMHO NO trick is..they all need rehearsal and a proper handling and presentation.. A newbie never could do any trick satisfactory ..but he might well get away with his *lousy* handling before non-critical ppl.. Still, there is nothing like a selfworking trick..they only exist in dealer catalogues..

The best version of this effect was one which I bought in 1982 or 3, from International Magic. Paul Daniels did the same version on one of his shows at about the same time.
The cube is shown mixed then thrown out to someone to catch. Done. Solved. Examinable 'til the stickers faded! It was a genuine Rubik's Cube. Dr. Zordas |

This effect had a bit of celebrity status when it was used on Broadway in the re-make of the musical "Once upon a matress" (starring Sara Jessica Parker). The court magician comes on stage, fiddling with a mixed up Rubik's cube, and when asked what it is, he simply reamrks that it's something he picked up from the future, whereupon he tosses it into the air, and voila!
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

I recently saw this on Dirty tricks on Channel 4 and thought it to be a very cool effect, I'm going to have a scout around for the Daryl version, but is it possible to still get the routine Dr. Zordas is on about?

As a matter of record, I believe this effect was originated by a Magician/Clown right here in Arizona. I cannot think of his name at the moment, but will post it when it "appears". Does anyone else remember the original?

In my opinion the Enchanted Cube was marketed (invented?) by Craig Nichols. Maybe it is the same method that was 1st used by Daryl.
You have to remember the moves carefully, because after a mistake its very difficult to to get back to the starting position, even if you can solve a regular cube. |

I have to say that I have no idea of the exact mechanics of the marketed versions of the effect - but I remember seeing Paul Daniels doing it on his show - which I, as a kid, thought was really cool - so I immediately made my own version. The effect looked identical to the one I saw on TV and it only took a few minutes to make so, unless there is something really clever about the marketed versions that I am missing, then I thought it was a cool - but reasonably simply trick.
Make mine a double.

Daniels' version was ever so slightly different to that of Doug Henning.
I'm not sure at the moment who marketed the Enchanted Cube but I know that it's in my cupboard. There is a little more to it than described earlier and I won't explain that in this forum out of respect for the rest of you. (Why do people have to post secrets - or their version of a secret - in this forum that ANYONE can get into? It totally kills the wonder and some of us do like to not have to read an explanation if we don't want it.) |

Craig Nichols was the first Rubik's cube effect to hit the market. His version was the one used on the Doug Henning TV special.
