I was working a bar last night and was performing osterlind's breakthrough system deck and guessing cards and a spectator was just not having it. He slapped a Jackson on the table said "Im gonna think of a card, if you can guess what I'm thinking of its all yours." To my benefit he was thinking of an ace. But he wasn't satisfied claiming that he had chosen a card that everybody probably picked and so picked a different card. I guessed 7 next and it was incorrect to his pleasure and I asked "well what card were you thinking of?" "3 of spades." If I had my ID I would of used that but I didn't, but I always have the KK so I said "really? That is interesting because..." and pulled out my wallet and revealed the 3 of spades. He was floored and gave me the bill. If you are not using the KK at table hopping, get it and use it because the reactions are priceless...

Good for you! I love stories like this. However, once in a rare while I have been challenged in the same context. When I guess wrong...anticipating that I will get the spec to reveal the thought of card once I have failed...the spec has refused to reveal the card claiming that I lost my chance at winning the loot.
A dear friend who used to work a local bar years ago purchased KK when it first hit the market. I found that when he resorted to the ,"off by one" reveal, it always came off as weak way to admit failure to laymen...magicians, however, were always delighted by this unique out. |

You have to work them up to how impossible it would be that you did it in advance and the proof is right in your wallet - it can’t be changed so you too have committed… and so it goes till they name the card. It’s all in how it’s done.

Love the story. I have been aware of KK for quite some time, but just started using it. I too was a bit concerned as to the reaction I'd get by have to use the 'out'. Maybe I've just been lucky with my audiences, but I've been getting great responses even when using the 'out'.

I have come to find out that the "out" is far stronger than getting the card right.
Perhaps it's the idea of the failure and recovery that makes it so. I do find that I'm hoping they call for a seven every time. |

I am probably completely wrong but it seems just as impossible to force a card and have a duplicate in your wallet(perhaps the classic force)as it seems so fair they think it is a completely free choice is this not just as effective? I do not have KK and am probably being stupid it was just a thought!

I have created little white envelopes for each KK card (I get four out of a sheet of A4 typing paper and can knock them out fairly quickly). That way if I am "off by one" I give the envelope to spectator to open. They then pull out the card and notice it is not quite right. I let that sense of "almost right" hang for a second or two and then get them to turn the card over. Bang!
I never treat the "off by one" as an out. If you think that way the audience will pick up on it (magician's guilt?). Think of it as the effect. I get good reactions and I am with Kolchak in thinking that the "off by one" is the stronger ending. I also like using an envelope as it creates a time delay and lets you get the wallet out of the way before the reveal. Pulling the card straight out the wallet loses some of the drama that having the card hidden in an envelope engenders. There is a moment when you have to prove your bold claim and all the focus goes to the envelope. The spectators have a moment to wonder if it is possible that you actually guessed which card they thought of. I am sure there are loads of people that don't like the envelope but here's a pic of how they look. I like them as they also give me something to write on so I combine KK with another effect.
