Hello, my name is Chris, and I am a newbie to magic, but I am loving it.
I have been lurking here for about a month and decided I should jump and say "Hi". This forum has provided me with lots of information and plenty of entertainment, so I thought it might be rude to not say thanks to this community. If I had known the "The Amazing Christopher" was already a taken name (by the Michael Jackson impersonator) I would have picked something else, haha. Since my main audience is just my 6-year-old stepson and his friends, I can probably get away with it, though. Magic has been a great way to connect with him. Anyway, I probably won't post much, and I'll just keep reading and learning here (I don't have much to contribute, yet, like I said I am very new) but thanks for having me. So far I can do an almost decent thumb fan (still working on the one handed close, it looks a little sloppy) I felt like it was impossible when first learning it, but after a month of practice I know it is possible to get down, even if I feel like my hands are too small. I can do nickels to dimes, a couple of prop tricks, and some of the really easy card tricks. The only thing I would like to offer is to other new people: Practice is needed! Do not get discouraged. Do not think that you can't pull it off, just find your "groove". It has been very rewarding to go from zero to being able to do anything decent, and my wife and kids and in-laws enjoy my little performances. I hope you other new magicians have a great time with this hobby and this forum like I do. Also, if you are lucky enough to have a "local magic shop" like I have near me, please remember to support them. I won't try and save a few bucks by looking online, I go into the mom and pop store down the road and its always worth it. Lastly, here is a video I made yesterday, all critiques are welcome. https://youtu.be/u73xTZmqnl4 Magically yours, -Chris |

Welcome TheAmazingChristopher,
And welcome to Magic. Having a local "Brick and Mortar" shop is a big advantage. You are so wise to value it. Check out the "New to Magic " forum. I PMed you. -Mary Mowder |

It's a funny coincidence to hear from you, as I have seen your advertisement before (which is how I know your stage name of "Magical Mary), you are quite accomplished. The store I am talking about is called "Grand Illusions", and from what I hear, they are the only store near our Sacramento Area until you go all the way down to the Bay Area. They are located near Fair Oaks Blvd here in Carmichael. I have seen clips of your performances on your website, and heard great reviews of you, I hope you are having a great career of this! My grandparents on my father's side were professional stage magicians (as well as a few other things), and of course I thought that was the coolest thing ever when I was growing up. Anyway, thanks again for the warm welcome and PM. And let me know if you want the address for "Grand Illusions"and I will gladly message it to you. |

I'm familiar with Grand Illusions and Steve, Leora and Don who run it but thank you so much for the offer.
I'll probably see you at their next "every so often" Saturday get together so be sure you get on their email list. In fact is if you were at the last one, we probably met. You'd never recognize me from this old photo LOL. Thank you for your kind comments Christopher. Mary |

I have only been learning magic for about a month, so I have never been to one of those events, but I did hear about it when I went in there and I signed up for the email list and look forward to the next event. I guess I will see you soon |

Hello Chris, welcome to the Café. Nice video as an introduction. There are many things you can do with a ball and vase and it's surprising how many laymen are fooled by a good presentation of this simple effect. Never sell yourself short and keep up the practicing.

Thanks Dave and Soumyajit. Dave, I have seen some people doing neat tricks with the cup and ball beyond what the little book says. I am still working on my cards for now, but I plan to learn more than just the out of the box tricks with it. Kinda hoping to find one that is a little more antique looking by then, not this one that looks kinda like a kids toy. Anyways, Cheers!

Chris, when you're ready to build on your ball and vase skills, here's a discussion thread you might find interesting:

It's still magic even if you know how it's done.
