They seem to be making another western adaptation of this film. I am curious as to if it is done well. It is such a great movie. The Magnificent Seven was a good adaptation of Seven Samurai. Looks like a good cast so here's hoping.

Kurosawa on Seven Samurai: "A movie as rich as a buttered steak topped with grilled eel."

It was a great film but I can’t recall their names, with the exception of Dopey.

Many forget or don't know that Kurosawa was greatly influenced by John Ford's westerns.

I'm glad that Danny brought up this classic movie, Seven Samurai. Along those lines, I was wondering if Danny ever saw the other Samurai movie, Harakiri? That movie, Harakiri, is in a class of its own --giving such an incisive and even scathing look at the Samurai code of Bushido.

If you like Seven Samurai, watch Takeshi Miike's 13 Assassins. It's basically a modern update, including the epic "village battle in heavy rain" scene at the end.

A Samurai film that might appeal to those here at the Café is Karasudo because it combines Samurai with the occult. That is, the titular character, Karasudo, is a Samurai Swordsman who is also a Palm-reader. Sometimes that Palm-reading helps to capture criminals because the Palm-reading enables him to read a person's character.

My mom's neighbors did (and the family still does) palmistry. They're actually a pretty notorious family locally and not because of the fortune telling. Actually one of two organized crime families in the neighborhood but the only one to use hexing as a revenge tactic when caught.

When the other poster mentioned Hexing, it reminded me of a science-fiction story. In that sci-fi story, citizens have their Identities registered by having their characteristic brain-wave patterns recorded. Somehow the villain had managed to secretly obtain the hero's brain-wave patterns. Then the villain made a weird Voodoo doll. But the Pins that he used to stab the doll were actually electronic antennas that were programmed with the hero's stolen brain wave patterns. That way, by using the Pins, he could disable an arm or a leg, etc, depending on where a pin (antenna)is stabbed. Scientific Voodoo, if you will.
The way the hero found out about the source was that his pet dog's sensitive hearing could detect the electronic transmissions. |

The only time I heard of a Palm-reader getting mixed up with Murder is the case of Palm-reader Andrew Fitzherbert. But to this day he still insists on his innocence. |

By our joint, there is what they call the Science Museum and in there they have, or they used to have, some Samurai suits of armour on show. They are very small for warriors but still quite scary looking as I recall.

The Japanese are also well-known for their Buddhism. So a good movie to watch is the biography of the revered Buddhist monk Dogen Zenji. Although nowadays it seems the most popular Buddhists are either Vietnamese(i.e.,Thich Nhat Hanh)or Tibetan(i.e.,the Dalai Lama).

The case of the aforementioned palm-reader Andrew Fitzherbert is certainly dismaying because of his incarceration. But so impressive are his books that even to this day palm-readers consider his book The Palmist's Companion as one of the most comprehensive books on Palmistry. I think it's because his book had the uniqueness that he reviewed the books of other palmists in his own book. That's the only time I saw a palmistry book do that.
