Hi all,

what are your thoughts about a strait jacket escape performed serious, to music, with a countdown?

Do you think there should be a danger to it - a risk factor if not executed in time?

Any other ideas on this topic?

Looking forward to your opinions.

Best,

If you use music, you won't be able to give the SJ what it needs, because you'll be trying to time it to the music.

Countdown. Why? If you're making it interesting, counting is unnecessary.

Danger. Again, if you're making it interesting, danger is unnecessary. Also...do you have the necessary experience to deal with a danger factor? Your questions suggest otherwise.

I've probably seen 500 people do SJ. Most of them don't really know how to perform it, and rely on music, countdowns, and perceived danger.

I'd guess that maybe 15 were interesting to watch. About 5 are on my top-ten best SJ list. The other 5 spaces are blank.

Music also hints at a fully rehearsed escape. If you finish in time with the music it could feel as though the escape was 100% choreographed. Any perceived danger or jeopardy then gets washed away.

I've seen music used to make it look like the escape has gone wrong. In other words, the music ends and the performer is still in the jacket. After a period of silence the music starts up again and the perform gets a second attempt. It's kind of like when a juggler drops on purpose or a mentalist will miss. It can add to the realism of the escape. However, more often than not it just looks Fake. Which of course it is.

I would suggest starting by thinking about what the straitjacket is and what it's supposed to be used for. It's not a magician's prop. It's not a prop at all. I believe the straitjacket is powerful enough to work on its own.

I also believe the straitjacket is overused.

I forgot to mention...a lot of people who don't know how to make it interesting, add chains.

All by itself, it can be an epic struggle.

If you purchase Roslyn's book "Get Real" you will read a spectacular description of a straitjacket escape that using no other props has the audience on the edge of their seats.

Pay attention to Roslyn and Harley. They learned by years of real experience.

Credit where it's due, I learn by listening to Harley.

His ideas tend to venture away from the regular path. But if you follow him, even for only a short part of your journey, you'll find new and exciting ways of doing things.
