Kjellstrom, interesting idea. Reminds me of a trick I used to do (can't remeber the name off hand) that used 2 green silks and one yellow silk attached to a dowel rod. You would make the yellow silk jump from one end to the other after placing it behind your back. Kids would scream at this one. You would grab all three silks and give them a yank and the yellow one would jump to the center.
I'm positive your method is different, but the effect sounds simular. Good luck with this effect; $4.00 is indeed a bargain.

Howdy!
No, yo are correct, the effect is not new! But I think my concept is new. The rope and the knots can closely be checked out. You can also mix this effect with other rope effect... That´s a big value for the working performer. I have done this effect uncountable times and still likes to do this. There is a similar effect with a wooden block and three ropes hanging down with some object attached. Nice effect, but you cant let the spectator to examines the wood block. My magic builds on effects that are clean and straight forward. Up to you what choice you do! More Great Ebooks are coming... |

Important info!
I got a good question from a magicÃan about the method: The method is NOT similar to Charles Bertram´s verions of this effect. |

The Charles Bertram trick is called "Here, There and Everywhere" and it's from a book called "Merlin's Puzzler Vol. 2" by Charles Barry Townsend (Pub 1977 by Hammond Incorporated). He use a different method.

I just bought the routine. The description says that the magician "turns around".
Does this mean I must turn my back to the spectators????? I hope not.

No, you dont have to do that, to turn around.
If you read all the manual then you find a extra comments thats says; "...just take the ring and rope behind your back..." |

Yeah, I don't want to do that either.
maybe we can brainstorm about a different move that would work. I like the routine. it's certainly worth the $4 price. thanks Does anyone else feel uncomfortable turning your back or putting the rope behind your back? Maybe it's ok, afterall, since you're turning around as a joke the first couple times. hmmmm..... frank

I've been using the Bertram version of the same effect for years - it's a sort of a poor mans Monkey Bar. I've always worked it as a sucker effect in a kids show: as you pass it behind your back and the ring jumps from one end to the other the kids are screaming out that you're just turning it around. When the screams get the loudest, you jump the ring to the middle knot - magic!
It has the same effect as Hippity Hop Rabbits, Run Rabbit Run, ABC Stung, and all those other sucker routines, but it doesn't cost anywhere near as much, it takes up very little room in your case (pocket, even!) and you can go straight on into other rope or ring and rope moves! I like Kjellstroms method, but it's probably no better (for me, anyway) than the way I already do it. It's certainly worth the money - and even H & R can't deliver that fast! Cheers, Bill
He asked me if I liked card tricks. I said "No." He did three. (W. Somerset Maugham)

I have done this effect uncountable times and I still do it because the audience loves it. Simple magic with great impact.
The big difference in method is that you can show the rope with only three knots in the start of the routine. Charles Bertrams routine depends on the cover of the slip knot in the beginning. This could be very uncomfortable. I think its important to be very clear in the approach to the audience. You let the spectator check the knots out in the beginning of the routine which makes the whole experience more powerful. When they know the rope and knots are real they will feel a breeze of amazement when the effect happens! |

Is anyone else currently using this trick? It seems appealing, but I would like to hear some other views.

Ken Allen produced "THE MONKEY BAR" in the early '60s. Then Acrobatic Silks (similar type of effect to the MONKEY BAR) followed. FAB Magic (Colon, Michigan) has an improved version of Acrobatic Silks.
In 1977,I was "producing clown" with FRANZEN BROS. CIRCUS. We did the Monkey Bar in a circus ring (surrounded) by putting the BAR into a large brown paper shopping bag.

I don't know when he published it but old U. F. Grant used to sell a version called "Poor Man's Monkey Bar". I guess it had to be in the early 60s. I remember getting the simple one-page with one, crude, hand-drawn Illustration complete with a plastic bracelet (ring) and a length of magicians rope for a big $1.50 in the mid 60s.
I got a used Acrobatic Silks from Al Cohen in the mid 70s and didn't like the look so I re-made the prop using a length of bamboo for the stick. It seemed to me that bamboo and silk went together. A couple of corks filled the ends. I was using Zanadu Bamboo Chinese Sticks with a three stick routine and used the extra stick to make the prop. Our Mats Kjellstrom has updated and streamlined the handling and the routine. The old Grant version had a degree of fumbling and some "work" that had to be done behind ones back. In Mats version there is absolutely no fumbling and no stalling. The routine flows easily and you are left with a length of rope and a ring to meld into any other ring and rope bit you want. Not bad for a mere $5.00.

Hey Harry! I remember now, the Gen Grand Poor Man's Monkey Bar! I can appreciate your recycling the "extra" Chinese Stick!
I just looked at Rick Fisher's ad (courtesy of friend Kjellstrom) Oh dear! Rick quoted me in his ad. I'm going to make him buy the coffee, the next time we get together!!!
