I don't understand why more companies aren't offering downloadable directions (videos, etc) or putting their videos on flash drives instead of dvd's. Especially in this day and age of high-speed internet. I love being able to access Shin Lim's video for Triage on multiple devices and being able to watch/learn on the go. I remember when video guides, directions, performances, etc, came on vhs and then moved to dvd, but they seemed to have stopped there. What do you all think? Any and all input would be appreciated.
Thanks, Todd

While flash drives have certainly dropped in price, they still cost more than DVDs. They're also smaller, and thus easier to lose. I keep my DVDs on a shelf, but I'm not sure where I'd keep flash drives (I suppose I'd just copy the content to my hard drive).

This is a nice artile exlaining just that. Funny how a day's readings can prove useful later on :-p
http://www.forbes.com/sites/dadehayes/20......360c605a IMHO, it's more like what Doug said: price, and what do you do -with a drunken sailor- with a flashdrive once you obtained the content? I once lost my hard drives completely in a burglary, and was happy to see that the DVD's didn't even interest them. I lost every data that wasn't on CD or DVD... |

Sulfide-
Man, took words right out of my mouth- I am a extreme newbie,do not understand 1% of the nomenclature tossed around But I bought a couple of videos/gimmick and watched them. Trouble is I am really slow on the uptake- A glance is not gonna teach me diddly. Granted I was sent a DVD and thank goodness I paid for DVD and Streaming cause.............ta.........da... I use an Apple and the DVD's no worry para me. But they are easily downloaded.......but I use IPads/IPhonex... yeah, you get it. I betcha in 5 years we have apps to the forums we like etc. Heard it here first- Have a great weekend to all. Mark |

I'd rather see teaching videos as downloadable/streaming content, then it's accessible anywhere you have internet access and if you DO happen to loose your hard drive, you can just download the content again or stream it

So whenever something is streamed without download option I am not completely happy. When there is a download option, I download at once and keep also backups of my drives. For DVDs my solution is to rip them, of course only if/where allowed by fair use copyright policies. Clearly I cannot and will not distribute these copies, I just keep them on my various devices. This solution has two advantages: multiple device, any place, any time access (w/o internet as well) PLUS I have a backup in case the DVD replay makes trouble.

At the end of the day, downloads are probably here to stay since they reduce cost and make it convenient for everyone to always have access with just a click away.

Before going with a streaming-only option, it might be wise to find out: how many online magic shops have folded in the last five years? Ten years?

The web is inherently transient. Think of the complaints when Penguin temporarily made its discussion forums disappear. Amazon once surprised Kindle users by recalling a book in response to a copyright issue; while they refunded the purchase price, Amazon customers were not pleased to learn that a book they thought they owned could just disappear. Streaming is great in addition to a download or physical media, but I wouldn't want to rely on it instead of a download or something tangible.

For amazon e-books I accept the limitations grudingly (Digital Rights Management, aka Digital Restrictions Management; risk of amazon going out of business soon is low). But I prefer to use amazon only for novels or "transient" topics. For magic, I prefer PDF downloads, e.g. from Lybrary.
