Next weekend I am going to teach a small group of magicians (beginners and intermediate) in gospel magic. I have made a list of great effects which are easy to perform, but still very entertaining. My plan is to show the original routines (without a gospel message). Then we will create our own routines and gospel presentations.
Our first trick will be “The Invisible Ball”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NX93cC5hbTY Please help us to kick start our brainstorming process by throwing in some ideas on how we can turn this funny routine into a meaningful and highly entertaining gospel routine. |

This is going to sound harsh but if you are going to teach others to create their own routines and gospel presentations shouldn't you already have a bunch of idea's in your head? Or at least be able to kick start your own class with idea's?
Shouldn't you be brainstorming with your students? I'm sure you'll get lots of idea's here, but then what's the point of brainstorming idea's with your students? I think I raise some valid points, and I sincerely mean well.
Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.

Although it is nice to find a gospel effect to pair up with a favorite magic effect, there are times when it is better to first think of what spiritual truth you want to illustrate. For this, it can be helpful to have an existing non-magical illustration that you put a magical twist to it. For example, years ago I liked the "wordless book" illustration of the gospel, and modified a magical coloring book to produce the different colors of the "wordless book" (I think Steve Varro manufactured a variation of this for a short time)
It wasn't great magic, but I don't want the message to take a back seat to the magical effect (my purpose is not entertainment). In fact, at street fairs, I've used simple magic tricks/props to get peoples attention, follow with a more direct gospel message where a black silk after covered with a red sill, disappears, leaving just a white silk, and patter and quote passages of how Jesus' blood covers our sin, leaving us pure (white) and segue into a straight discussion with people as soon as it seems appropriate). It seems that all of this should be motivated by your audience, and what you are trying to accomplish - In this setting, I am more of an evangelist, not an entertainer, and I've found that the magic has been a good way to get people's attention, and gives me the opportunity to share spiritual truths with others.
