Many performers seem to describe themselves in the third person on their websites, ie "Joe Bloggs' sparkling personality will make your event amazing", when it's patently obvious that Joe Bloggs is the author of the site in question and is describing himself.
I'm assuming that performers do this so they can sell themselves as a product without sounding as if they are bragging, and perhaps to give the impression that they have staff that look after the business side of things for them. Of course this can often be the case, but then it's a little embarrassing when some website authors occasionally slip into the first person again or mention something that makes it obvious that they are talking about themselves. When creating a presence on the web is it really preferable to describe yourself in the third person or would it perhaps be more honest and straightforward to state that the website is yours and you are the one that the client will be contacting?

"Joe Bloggs' sparkling personality will make your event amazing" I write my stuff first person with a signature and photo at the bottom. In fact, you won't find anywhere on my site where I say, "Robert Bloor can do this for you or Robert Bloor that." Nobody really cares whether Robert Bloor can do something or Doofus the Clown can do it. They care about THEIR results. And that's a key distinction in successful sites* and a few others out there. Robert Bloor *By successful I mean you're generating business through the website, NOT a 'busy' performer who happens to have a website.

Thanks for your reply Robert.
Anyone else? Does your website describe you from the viewpoint of someone else or do you describe yourself and your services from your own point of view? Which do you think is best? And why?

The answer is:
It depends on what image you are projecting. |

A website that is desgin to sell your servies... and one that is designed to be a sales tool and not a flashy trophy... should be written in first person..
You want to make sure the people know you are a business professional and that your product is top quality... Do this by explaining how your product will be important to them and what it can do to satisfy their needs... People who sell have to be confident in their product... if they're not... they'll never be able to sell it... |

Hi guys,
do you have some more tips on this subject? Right now my website is written in first person but since I am going to refresh my whole website I am wondering if I should write in third person? Most performers seems to have the website written in third person… but I personally like to write in first person… any further advices? |

I was once told that the answer to this question depends on the target audience for the page. If you're selling to a birthday mom, then you want to be more personable and write as though you're talking directly to her using first person. If your're selling corporate shows, then third person sounds more professional.
However a different professional in our industry counceled me to write in 3rd person. I've opted for 3rd person since my kid show sells to preschools, schools, and birthday moms. When I eventually segment my site more or have a different site that separates the pages for bday shows from the learning institutions, then I may write the bday page in 1st person. |

It seems a lot less tacky to post your accomplishments and credits in third person, rather than "I did this and then I did that and I'm amazing because and..."
For the markets I'm in, it never made sense to have the site in first person. |

It is hard to brag about how great one is without being annoying.
I can do this I can do that I am amazing, even if true is tough to do without annoying people. Written 3rd person seems to have a better feel to it.

I've heard both arguments many times. I like the third person because the "ego" plays subconscious tricks on you when you read I-I-I-I-I. Pretty much what Danny said above.

Yeah looking after looking through this thread, I think I'm going to try to find a hybrid of the two. I think 3rd person adds credibility, but I think it does help to have something in 1st person to express a humanizing and personal message.

If your copy reads I-I-I than you have a problem. People don't care about you or your accomplishments, but they do care about themselves and what you can do for them. Your copy should read you-you-you. What is it that you are providing your customers? What solutions are you bringing to the table. I prefer first person over third person in most of my marketing materials. I think it's incredibly easy to write in third person, but It takes much more creativity to write in first person and still make the copy about the prospect or client.

I would never switch back and forth. Tim thinks that would be confusing. I am brilliant. And he's humble, too.
