Whats that one effect that you always pack when you have an important booking maybe a wedding or corporate etc and why ?
An example from myself would be extreme burn because its instant reset, highly visual and it most definitely has the wow factor. |

Chicago Opener. Sets you worlds apart from Uncle Joe and his "silly card tricks". If I have time to do a second, I will do something quick and visual with one coin. These two effects have gotten me gigs for years.

I believe Pop Haydn's is called "Chicago Surprise". It is also an excellent effect but I was referring to the "Red Hot Mama" / "Chicago Opener" from the Michael Ammar series (Vol 1). My deck is always set up when I go out for that effect (I change the card every time). I can open the pack, toss the Jokers aside and go right into it, as soon as I am done, I place the odd backer with the Jokers and am ready for any full deck effect. However, in the case like you are asking, I just put the cards away after the effect has a moment to sink in and go into my one coin "quickie".

I like the Chicago effects too but always use Chicago Surprise myself. Both are great though

Whilst I know of the Ammar version I'm no expert on the Chicago Opener/Surprise effect what are the main differences, is it that the first selected card is produced from the pocket in the surprise version ?

I've only seen opener performed and never have learned it. You'll have to defer to Poof-Daddy on this one

Regular size key becomes a 12 inch key
or color changing card where the deck changes at the end

This is Ammar's version (teaching at least) It is quicker and to the point. This is Pop's effect, it is quite a bit more complex but a great variation. When It comes to getting a gig, I find it better (more often than not) to be as short and visual as possible. The person doing the booking often does not have time to sit around and be entertained. I try to show one or two quick effects that are an "example" of what I will perform for the guests.

Thanks for the lesson Poof-Daddy. I had these backwards. I do the Ammar version

The "Ammar version" is credited to Frank Everhart, who says Jim Ryan showed it to him years ago and some historians trace it back to Al Leech. I have a tendency to forget whose effects many are due to learning so many from old VHS tapes. Even a lot of the books and magazines of the past have multiple contributors. It gets hard to remember at times but I do try. I usually remember "where I saw/read it" so I can go back and see. Other things were just taught to me either by my mentor or another magician (often without credits) so even those can get lost to me.
