The phrase nice but dim springs too mind.
Personally John and David should take a back seat and let those nice ladies like Cassandra (a dancer) have more lime light--- on Harry Allen's Tape she plays the part of a dancing horse---now that's funny. I too heard they were employees. Also on the left of our screen there is a section for all magicians that we never get to see. Shame, I'd be interested to know who's watching who. |

If the spectators don't get paid, I am sure that they at least get a free meal out of it. And who among us would't go to a magic show with the promise of free food?

Personally these people and their slightly fake reactions spoil it a bit for me. The first female spectator on a David Regal DVD has facial expressions that annoy the heck out of me. I've gone back to reading his books!

I miss Tania. She got a job elsewhere. She always had good, honest reactions.

But David Regal's presentation is sort of over the top at times too.

I've now seen a lot of ACR's on many L&L DVD's in front of the same audience members. Just how many times can they watch the card come to the top and act surprised? Daryl, Tommy Wonder, Regal, all have ACR's with several shared cast/audience members. It does get kinda old after so many DVD's. I will gladly go to any shoot if L&L needs me in the audince.....

You may be experiencing those routines within a short period of time from each other and having seen the routine for the umpteenth time, but those performances were years apart, and likely this is the only exposure to such magic this audience gets.
That said, there might be a little "missing the forrest through the trees" here. What you are seeing is an audience getting caught up in the performance of a performer, not just some trick. Tom |

Like Tom says, "an audience getting caught up in the performance of a performer". How many times have we so enjoyed a performance, that we miss the sleights? I know I do. I saw Mac King two times before I could concentrate on the sleights he was doing.
L&L could easily have the Expert play to a camera with no audience, but they want learning Magicians to see how a pro handles the unexpected (that can include laughter), etc.

In Burger's Magical Voyages 1, I thought I noticed a stifled or forced "wow" from the audience during the Cutting Ten routine then remembered the same audience saw a very similar handling (if not the same) of the same effect when they sat for Bill Malone's On the Loose series. I'm sure the audience is still entertained, but since the surprise factor is diluted because of the patter set-up, that burst of astonishment doesn't happen.

Which proves my point, Jive-Turkey. Burger's DVDs were shot first.

I like David's reactions too. Some of them are priceless. Remember how he reacted when Ammar performed Card on Ceiling, and Columbini's Paramount? Priceless!
And remember that David's codename is "Big Red"! And that one guy I see over and over on the shoots. He looks like Frank Oz, the guy who does Miss Piggy, Fozzy Bear, and Yoda. At first, I swore that was who it was. But I was wrong. I was just waiting for him to go "Woka, woka!!" Do these people have a REAL job anywhere? Must be nice! I miss Tanya too. Everytime I called L&L, her sweet voice just made my heart go pitter patter, and she just made my day.
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.

In one of the ETMCM videos, Michael Ammar asked, "For the very first time, what was the name of your card?" The response: "Tanya" (because she had signed her card with her name). That was a priceless moment!

I think I remember Jon saying he is a carpenter, maybe from a David Regal DVD.
