On Nov 17, 2016, Artie Fufkin wrote on The Origin of the Riffle Stacking thread: That is one point of view but I think we can also look at this BB differently. Yes, The Gambling Spot is not the same as it was originally as far as contributions and the knowledge of the participants. That is a fact and it is neither good nor bad...it simply is. The site consists at this time primarily of magicians, demonstrators, hobbyists and wannabees with possibly one of two members with actual hustling experience. The posts or lack of posts reflect that fact. There is still good quality material posted from time to time with good insight. This has been recently reflected by the Faro Shuffle videos and posts, the posts on plastic cards, high tech card cheating device, Joey's Video Vault as well as other posts. What does one expect to see on a BB such as this? Anyone who really knows some good techniques and gaffs is not going to tip because they are currently being used under fire. Gaffs in current use are not fun and games. Most of the members on this BB know very little and simply are looking to learn, for their own use and knowledge as demonstrators and hobbyists and really can't contribute anything of great value. Even if we go back to the inception of this BB, granted a small group of contributors knew more and made some higher quality posts but for the most part, the majority of the members knew very little and were curious or simply trying to learn. Even DOC who professed to be a "real cheat," and probably did some small time hustling, mostly explained and video demoed old moves and magician based gaffs. Most accepted that he was a pro because they had no experience in that arena and did not know how real world hustling was actually done. DOC made some interesting posts, ranted to a certain degree, spouted a lot of "in your face jive" and BS but for the most part was simply entertaining and helpful to the starry eyed newbies. So...the BB is what it is and one can either lament that it is not what it was, or sit back, have some fun and once in a while enter into a more serious discussion. It falls into place when one simply keeps in mind it is a site for magicians, demonstrators, hobbyists and curiosity seekers and always has been. The only "real work" one gets a glimpse of is when a casino gaff gets caught and exposed, or an advantage player goes public and then it is usually second hand knowledge even then. So sit back and enjoy it for what it is or, rather than get aggravated, move on to something else. |

I remember years ago there were a number of posts on TGS with titles like "How I Made John Scarne Wet His Pants With My Brilliant Undetectable Moves". Guys typing with one hand, you know? They're pretty much all gone which is nice. Still one assumes that real-life pro "advantage players" don't spend any time at all discussing their real methods on an internet forum. I certainly don't expect to see anything like that here. But anecdotes about various types of hustles have always been of some kind of ancillary interest at least to magicians. And this is after all a magicians' site. That's all I personally expect to find here. And I do try to throw in a little something now & then, if only to illustrate the POV of a half-smart guy.

Nobody does any research?
Nobody makes any effort? There was a time when the forum was research heavy, and the place to discuss needle tell faro boxes, gaffed dice, shakeouts, flash work and the like. This is history - easily researched and easily shared ... it just requires a modicum of effort. Now it's bad jokes and posts that either should, or DO get moved over to one of the magic forums - bent on discussing magic tricks and magicians. Sorry for being a downer (not really), but having been a Gambling Spot regular under a couple of monikers since the very beginning, it's a drag to watch the forum circle the bowl, as it "metaphorically" disappears. |

@Artie
Well, I wouldn't mind posting detailed posts about moves, items, techniques, players, etc. As I said above, a thank you is enough for me. Of course, when a couple of guys add a few interesting comments, it's even more interesting. But I'm afraid we have to deal with 2016's generation. People take and leave (and we're lucky when they don't sale what they took for free...) and that's it. When I post a video for instance, there's like 1,000 or 1,500 views. When I get 3 thanks, it's a miracle. Yes, I could write 2 pages long articles like I did in the past, but for whom? How many regulars here? Less than 20 I think... |

The funny thing is: If you take your videos down you suddenly get dozens of messages from people asking why they are not available anymore. Some are even hostile. Therefore, thanks a lot Arnold for still taking the time to post videos on here! Also thanks to Artie! I really enjoy your insight. Especially the ""The Gambling Spot" through the ages" thread got me digging through the old posts again. |

@AMcD: Thank You!
@JFX: Well, I asked too, but it was just an innocent question. It's good to look to the works of people with a greater experience and skill as a reference point, so I know what and how to improve myself. I'm referring to AMcD and JFX videos, as well as all the interesting posts here on the Gambling Spot. I share what I can, I'd love to contribute myself when I'll have enough work on what I want to share, in order to construct a proper reasoning. @Cag: I consider myself a student of the material, therefore I may fit in one of the categories, but who knows. Homo faber est fortunae suae, but regardless of my dedication and efforts, I've gathered some insights in here that I'd never thought about them on my own, and these may provide new ideas or contents (good or bad). For the lack of posts you should consider that there aren't many people who have the knowledge to share or discuss anything on the subject, or the skill requested to show something. You have to be open to opportunities, who knows what's coming next. Maybe I can steal some radioactive tracers from the lab and develop a new marking sytem. If I don't die trying |

I was just watching The Grand Budapest Hotel movie and thinking, thinking that actually, the responsibilities of the proprietor of a common gaming house and a bellboy are very similar.
Sorry got to go, somebody is ringing the bell. Later

In the past I was dismissive of card magic. To me it was a boring ONE trick pony (pick a card).
Then I saw the movie "Shade" and that was a paradigm shift. My interest in this topic exploded and came to the center. This has become a passion and I am truly grateful for everyone here who contributes. My journey has had stops and starts, but I am staying with it. What I do with it eventually is of little importance. Just personal accomplishment is the goal. If I can give back anything of value, I will (unless it was relayed to me in confidence). Now back to that impossible perfect riffle shuffle! |

It wasn’t such fun here until Cag arrived and told us all how he had mastered the grand piano, conquered Erdnase, subjugated the Gardena card clubs etcetera and all before he was knee high to a grasshopper and then how he went on to hang out with the Mafia and onward to give Dai Vernon the brush off at the Magic Castle, among his other ripping yarns.

While such avid adoration on his part is completely justified, perhaps it would be better if he calmed down and went back to pumping cards in the illegal poker game he deals and continue associating with the dregs of society in the slum section of town in which he works. And uggg, having to clean the rest rooms and sweep the floors after the game breaks up, that can't be much fun. Too bad his arrest record prevents him from getting a dealing job in a reputable casino, because dealing is all he is qualified for. |

Yes I am so boring that it caused my parents and sister to run away. It were always raining in Birmingham, except on days when it were fine. And there weren't many of them, not if you include drizzle as rain.

I was reading some of the older post and Tommy was one of the first here (first page or page 71).
Tommy, did you ever get the book "Gambling Card Sharps: How to Beat a Cheater"? If so, is it worth a purchase? |

I have never had a good memory and lately my head is like a sieve and can't recall that one. I have lots of old books on PDF some on old discs which will not play on this new computer. I know a computer expert and keep forgetting to ask him to sort it for me when he is here. Hmmm is that book French, written by French policeman, with lots about Baccarat in it?

I think I have that one on one of my old discs and it is not the old French book I was thinking of.
