I hope this is not the last of the “Magica” series because each one is as good or better than the prior one.
Magica III, Gems from the Repertoire, is a work of art on many levels. The Glossy pages are filled with sharp color close up photos carefully posed to show you how to execute each effect. Each chapter is organized like the prior books with Effect, Skills Needed, Props Needed, Setup, Explanation and Script, and at the end, Discussion. Where a prop or gaff needs to be constructed, there is section on Construction of Props. For those props that require more than basic arts and crafts, Larry does sell them and they are priced reasonably. One of them, The Time Tunnel, was made available before the book came out as a separate item. I have it and it is a wonderful prop, and there is no way I could have made it myself. The writing as usual is clear, concise, and easy to follow. The color photos are right next to the text. I prefer that than having them all on one page or color plate. Almost every effect includes a script and a few are in verse. One of joys in reading magic books is discovering clever new methods and the inner workings of ingenious pieces of apparatus. Below I have listed some chapters and a short description and my impression. 1. Magician vs Card Mechanic: Similar plot as Magician vs Gambler by Lorayne but the queens are clearly placed and shuffled into the deck which is cut and the magician finds and tables three of them and an ace. The 3 tabled queens turn into the other three aces. The 4 queens are cleanly removed from four different pockets or a wallet without placing a palmed card into any of those pockets. The finale is so clean and the deck can be examined. 2. Hat Trick: Three crocheted balls and a baseball cap are the props. Everything is gaffed but they will never suspect that. The spectator will not be able to believe how these balls jump back and forth from hat to hand. Drop 3 in that hat and 2 come out, drop 2 in and 1 comes out etc. And you can show the hat empty and there is nothing to see. At the end, a large jumbo ball is produced. Some very basic sleights combined with the gaffing makes this an outstanding effect. 3. Dating Game: Great script in verse for this one. Spectator places kings face up in the deck where he wants and each king finds the queen of the same suit. Easy to do. 4. Three Coin Quickie: A coins across for the sleight of hand lovers. All sleights are taught. This is the most difficult effect in the book. However two of the sleights are from 21st Century Coin Mechanics and they are fully explained here. Larry even gives a slightly easier version. 8. You Must Be Joking: This a fantastic routine which could be a centerpiece of a FISM act. In the cleanest manner, four blue backed jokers change to red backs and then all back to blue. The changes are startling. At the end the jokers change to four kings which can be examined. Not difficult to do but will require rehearsing to remember the sequences. Yes there are gaffs involved. 11. Revisible Balls: This should get an award for clever magical invention. Two cardboard coffee cups are used. It starts off like a single cup and ball routine but then goes crazy. After a basic cup and ball routine, the two cups are shown empty. One is placed aside. Three balls are dropped into the other cup and only two fall out. Two balls go into the cup and then only one falls out. Finally one ball placed in the cup and none fall out and the cup is shown empty. Each time the hands can be shown empty. The other empty cup which was set aside is turned over and the three missing balls roll out. While they are gasping at that, the magician loads a fruit or large ball under the cup for the finale. The mechanics of the cups are ingenious. Making them would not be easy and there are components which will be hard to locate. This is one of those items Larry sells separately and it’s on my wish list along with Hat Trick. 12. The Time Tunnel: I have this effect. It is fun to do and the apparatus does almost all the work. Briefly, half dollars penetrate through a solid partition in a round wooden box. The partition is genuinely solid. The penetrations are amazing and so easy to do. As a finale, a real silver dollar and a penny are produced from the box. 14. Imaginary Balls: A great routine using a silk, sponge balls, and a small box with no top or bottom. Eight balls are produced from an empty silk and dropped in the box. The box is covered with the silk for a moment and all eight balls disappear from the box and silk. Great angles and very easy to do. 20. The Speed of Magic: This is an uncanny transposition of an English penny and an American half dollar between a card case and a small box. Gaffs make this work and it really looks like real magic. 22. Impossible Prediction: An envelope containing a playing card and a number is set aside and can be held by the spectator. The spectator shuffles the cards and sets them aside back in the card case. The magician show the first prediction which is a card. The spectator takes the deck and deals it into three piles. He then freely reassembles the piles as he chooses. The magician then shows the second prediction which is a number. The spectator counts to that number and it corresponds to the first predicted card. No sleights, no memory, no calculations. Works every time. 23. Let’s Make a Deal: This effect is a borrowed ring disappears from a small vial. A nest of 3 boxes are opened and a sealed envelope in finally removed. Inside the envelope is a key case which in turned over and the missing ring is found hanging from a key chain. The boxes are not gaffed. The loading is really ingenious and very deceptive. Those are a sample of chapters that I have enjoyed. The book is really outstanding with wonderful original effects and you will use effects from this book. BJ |

Thanks for starting this string, box… Great rundown there.
Just got Larry's latest here…And it continues to hold true to the brilliance of this man & his magic. His books are always so well thought through and presented, and this one holds serve. He gives you a good bit of everything, from cards to coins to ideas to sponge balls to everything, and a few things you might not have thought of. And the thinking is always out of the box with new ways to approach what is or what can be. I'm just getting into this, and he's even included a masterpiece in his "Time Tunnel" in there, and about 20+ other effects and routines covered in this NEW offering, and there's something there for everybody. Indeed, these are as the subtitle suggests "gems," and happy to see a coin effects too. All of it, just well thought out pieces of magic, and expertly illustrated by some brilliant photography…It's got the real feel of taking you right inside Larry's hands, every move…Amazing! Finally, here…You might know that Larry is a doctor, and a fine one at that. But he is also a really good writer and communicator, a man of mathematics and music and other wondrous things of life. I'm so glad he found his grandfather's old trunk of magic stuff in the attic, and that it found him. What he gave to his grandson, Larry has given back tenfold to us all in this art, in many arts and humanity itself. I am truly proud to know him and to call him a friend. *Oh, and all of it is motivated and supported by what truly makes all good men greater, the love of his life, his most important magic of all. His work and fine offerings should be on every magic book shelf everywhere and beyond. The thinking is consistently superb, the construction of ideas & workings are absolutely surgical. Before one day far off we look back to admire such good magical thinking and doing, take time right now and enjoy the gifts he has woven from his life into this great art. *Highly Recommended…and then some.

This book is packed with great magic and the variety is amazing. The card effect Dating Game is fantastic. After reading Hat Trick, I ordered it. The routine is ingenious. The props supplied are perfect. I got the blue hat with the rubber balls. Couldn't be happier with the purchase.

Really enjoying this book. Just performed Impossible Prediction for some friends. Great reaction. They are still talking about that. If they only knew how easy it was to do. Now working on Revisible Balls. What a wonderfully mechanically piece of apparatus. It's probably my favorite from the book. Also working on Imaginary Balls. Mind boggling stand up effect with the vanish of eight balls. Book is packed with great routines based on out of the box ideas and clever inventions. Plenty of material for card or coin workers too. Highly recommend it.

The Deluxe Revisible Balls is on hold for now due to some technical issues in fabricating the cups. The original sets are in stock,
However, I have finished the prototype for a similar effect using US half dollars and two hand crafted wooden cups. I'm working on writing up the effect with color photo illustrations. I'll update this with some photos soon. Revisible Balls Larry |

Here is a photo of the finished prototype from my facebook page. This is a four phase effect. Cups shown empty (they are).
Three coins appear magically in one of the cups one at a time. Coins vanish from the hand Coins dropped in one cup vanish one at a time until there are none (hands and cups shown empty for each vanish). All three coins reappear in the second cup. Cups and coins are gaffed. Basic coin moves also needed. Not available yet for sale. PM me or email me to reserve one (barnowsky1@aol.com) Price $125 Larry |

When I first reviewed this book I mentioned some of the highlights. I would like to add "Two tricks in One" as another gem that I glossed over originally. It's one of those effects that you love once you perform it. In short, a selected card is shuffled into the deck. The four aces previously removed are inserted face down into the deck. The aces then all come to the top together. The deck is spread face down and the chosen card and its three mates are now face up in the deck.
