Like most children I grew up very inserted in magic. David Blaine was probably the first magician I really gravitated towards. Shortly after watching Criss Angel's Mind Freak series I was drawn in even more. I'm also a huge fan of Pen and Teller. When I was younger, maybe 12-13 years old, I had learnt some tricks and still remember a few =P (like giving the spectator a deck to shuffle, and being able to put the deck behind me and name off every single card correctly. And the coin in a sugar packet. Cups and balls). I used to perform for my siblings and cousins, but it didn't always go well haha, but that's part of the learning process. The difference now is I understand the concepts better. I also see it as more than just a "card trick" but actually engaging others and creating a picture or story per say.
I saw David Blaines new series just last week, and it reignited a small flame inside me. I have been doing a lot of reading (which is how I found this forum) and am very interested in diving deeper into this! I just spent the last hour and a half watching a movie, all the while, holding a deck of cards practicing Harry Lorayne's Halo Cut. (Which I watched a tutorial of just prior.) ...and I have to say, not only did I start to get the hang of it, I also did not notice (as much) the severe back pain I'm normally in! (= .. looks like I might be keeping cards on myself from now on! I am also currently reading Harry Loraynes and Jerry Lucas's Memory Book, which I am finding insanely interesting! Not just from a magic perspective, but something that can be used in everyday life. I was mind-blown when I read a list of ten- RANDOM words, just ONCE, and the next day I still remembered them - even backwards! I think the next book I get may be Magic and Showmanship, although there are a lot of good book suggestions in the other forum section I was looking at. Some of the things I'd like to work on are, sleight of hand / close up magic and mentalism. I am also currently trying to figure out Banas' PK Touch and the Spike under Cups. I really like the way Blaine did it to Jamie Foxx, and Criss's version he did on a "shadow stage". ( I Know these are probably really advanced versions). These forums seem huge, with a lot of sub-categories! So it looks like I will have my hands full navigating through for the next little while. I look forward to being a part of this community and getting to know others. (=

Welcome ThSecret,
Seems like you're having fun. A word of caution, several Magicians have really hurt themselves and some have hurt spectators doing the Spike thing. Different versions have differing risks but don't beeline to that effect as a beginner. Not being able to use one of your hands well or damaging a spectator for life should not be a beginner choice. Cards are a wonderful challenge. You are wise to get into some memory work. Best of luck and keep a record of your progress. -Mary Mowder |

Thanks for the warm welcome Mary! (=
I AM! I came across this forum a few times before but never actually signed up. I'm really glad I did! It is so easy to get lost in here for hours! I also just found out about the IBM rings and I believe there is one about an hour away, that is open for non-IBM members as well. (I wish I knew these groups existed 5-10 years ago when I first began dabbling in magic). But hey I'm still pretty young . I totally agree with you, the Spike is more of a veteran act with some possibility of serious injury. It is something I'd like to learn more about, but not something I will be rushing into. With a herniated disc, it already feels like theres a spike in my back haha. Maybe performing this for others with a non-lethal object like a Jenga block would be good practice? I feel something like this would be better suited for a stage, so not something I will be worrying about just yet. I love all kinds of magic, but "street magic" is what I'd like to get more exposure with at the moment. ^Ps. It's crazy that magicians have actually hurt spectators doing that... In my opinion they should never endanger anyone else life unless they know for a fact it is safe. I've seen it performed when the magician takes the spectators hand and crushes the cup.... ermmm that is Crazy if you actually have a pointy object sticking up under that cup! I'd really like to get some part of the PK touch down pat, in hopes of performing for my little cousins at our Christmas get together. I think that will be a fun way to portray "family bonds" through story, but I may just stick to some card magic if I feel any doubt about executing it smoothly. I think I have a good understanding of the second part (When Blaine touches Foxx's Nose), but the initial part seems like a challenge. (Like when Blaine touches Foxx's Daughters Shoulder?) Then uses what appears to be body language to get her to react the way he wanted. Very admirable! Lorraine did the trick where he cut out the middle of two cards and linked them together. That will be a fun little illusion to do for the kids, which I will be practicing for the new few weeks as well. I've also put a couple more hours into the Halo Cut today, and my muscle memory is getting better.

Welcome to the Magic Forum ThSecret.
If you want a safe way to do the spike, check Scott Alexander's "Nailed it".

Nice to meet you guys! @Bob and Super
Thanks, I'll check it out. Does Scott also teach his rendition of it, or is it just his performance?

Scott teaches his rendition and created a safe way (100%) to perform the effect.
