Hello all,
I am doing some walk around at a local ren faire as a fairy. I have a couple of good things in mind but I wondered about d'lights as they would make a perfect fairy light. However I cannot seem to get a clear answer on how much/little light. Obviously not broad daylight- but dusk/twilight? Any other ideas that could coincide maybe with faerie magic? Thanks. |

Well, w/ D'lites, dusk/twilight would really be best. Keep in mind that the red ones are the brightest and easiest to see when there's a bit of light. You'll just have to experiment when you are oot and aboot and see when the lighting is optimal. Fairy magic eh? Tricks w/ pink bicycle card? (I think they make mini decks which are pink. I think that would fit in well as a fairy. Definatley some ITR stuff. Floating/levitation tricks are great. You could also look into appearing flowers, and a TT so you can make silks appear/dissapear.

Can someone explain the principal of D'lites (I am not asking to learn secrets on the cheap!) I just want to know if it is appropriate for an amateur like me to use with friends and family. If the set up is very complicated and leaves me constricted for additional routines it won't work - leaving the room in order to set up would be very suspicious.
Would it be OK in a Mall setting since there is good lighting. Would there be a risk of getting 'caught' or flashing a gaff? Can it be used while seated in a Café or StarBucks? I am intrigued with levitation of any kind, I use LeClaire's method. BTW his video is excellent as is book. Jon's teaching style is excellent.

D'Lites make it appear that there is light coming from your fingertips. The principal can't be given without tipping the mechanism used. Suffice it to say, the set up is simple - completely uncomplicated. In fact, if you've ever purchased a magic set (not for kiddies), or a KLUTZ magic book (you know, "magic for klutzes" along with the millions of other klutz topic books), you are familiar with the magician's assistant gimmick used and know how easy it is to work.
Any mall of indoor setting works well. As with any other gimmick, you can get caught, but you probably have the basic gimmick already and already know how to work it. If not, go to http://www.youdomagic.com/x_dlite_.html where there is a D'Lites teaching video for $5 U.S. Download the video there and most all your answers will be found. -Dave |

It would be very appropriate for friends/family settings. It goes over very well and just takes a little practice to get the timing down.

I own two d'lights. It has NO set up NO funny moves or anything. It is perfect for close up stage or walk around and it can be performed standing up or sitting down.

D'Lite's are awful! the thumb tips are soooo obvious. I can't understand why anyone would wnat to do a trick like that! - Just an opinion though!

As with most Magical effects, you really can't see the impact of the effect on other's until you actually do the effect yourself. Use one while passing out Halloween candy. Grab a couple of pieces of candy (with the light on) and as you drop the candy into the kids bag, let the light go out. I have never had more fun passing out candy than I did last year, and the parents seemed to have as much fun as the kids did. I think that D'lites are best used (for me) in conjuction with other effects and not as a stand alone effect. They don't cost much, so my advice is to get one or two and give them a try, you might find that you have as much fun as your audience. Iven

Trust me I do have them.....well I still don't like them - I think it is too obvious hwo the trick is done. Maybe if I saw a professional do the trick I'd change my mind. but I haven't so for the time being I'll let them colletc dust in the back of my drawer

I hav used them also and I was a bit disappointed as they are soooo obvious. Maybe to little kids irosall they may hav had an effect but overall its too simple for my liking and too obvious. And yes, I hav used them but I prefer skillful magic. As with this niko character, I'll let them collect dust in the bottom of my draw.

Well Nik and Olly, I can't argue with your feelings about the D'lites. I have done the D'lites for adults more than for kids and the results have all been the same, Delight (pun intended). Maybe I have just been lucky but I will continue to use mine as long as the fun lasts.
One word of caution, don't do them too long. Keep a short routine and get on with something else. It is very easy to get carried away and want to keep going (not a good idea). Iven

Well you say to keep it in a short routine but I tend to disagree. The spectator ends up wanting more of a longer routine and so ends up disliking it. But what I don't like about this trick is it's not baffling or mind consuming like other classics such as the bitten coin, gadabout coins and I'll start again. You are made to look easy and cheap.
P.S. I like the pun. Keep trying. Olly

Iven,
You said 'don't do them too long.' I think I'll stick to not doing them at all. Well I'm glad it works for you, but hasn't with me, and anyway I prefer to learn skillful magic (not meaning to sound arrogant!) where some skill (surprisingly) is involved. I find it more rewarding after you have performed a difficult feat and you get a good reatcion, rather than the slightly guilty feeling that 'anyone could do this trick if they had the right equipment'. -Nik

I think it's kind of funny how davejesc wrote:
"D'Lites make it appear that there is light coming from your fingertips. The principal can't be given without tipping the mechanism used." And then he proceeded to type two paragraphs trying to help the previous poster out without tipping the method, and then Niko blurts out... "D'Lite's are awful! the thumb tips are soooo obvious. I can't understand why anyone would wnat to do a trick like that!" But anyway, I enjoy D'Lites and I have held my hands out in front of adults after doing a short routine with them, and they just want to know where the lights went - even with the D'Lites out in the open. I am a believer in the performer being able to make the effect work, they are only obvious if you make them obvious.

Even tho D'lite can work its only a gimmick alike the hummer card. It gives out more of a showmanship characteristic and I believe that the routine takes no time at all to master. I know u'll b saying "a bad worker blames his tools blah blah blah..." but personally I'm into close-up magic and this can't b examined afterwards which leaves the spectator suspicious.
It takes relatively no-skill and really I think it depends on the lighting and the quality of the thumbs and how believable they are. Olly

As far as skill goes, it takes as much and sometimes more skill to turn a simple "trick" into something wonderful and Magical. Presentation is EVERYTHING. We all have our favorite effects to perform and we should all perform those effects that we enjoy the most and are comfortable with and leave the rest for other's to perform and enjoy. PEACE Iven

I would REALLY like to get back on topic here and help our friend Embyr out.

(Or all three if you want.) 1. A D'rose. Like D'lites, this is a rose that lights up. You can use by itself or with D'lites, for the effect of grabbing a light, and throwing into a rose, or vice-versa. 2. An appearing rose. I don't have one of these, but I guess it's a long stemmed rose that just.....appears. 3. Appearing flowers. These are little paper mock flowers that fold flat and spring outward when released. Very easy to use. Sort of like accordians (without all the noise, wink wink). You might want to do a google search for flowers+magic tricks, or ask around some local magic shops. There's also a trick where you fold an oragami flower out of paper and it proceeds to float around. See what you can find. |
