Hi
I'm starting to put together a magic show that lasts around 35 mins and was hoping that someone could help me think of a few jokes to go along with some of these tricks : floating bill dlite cut and restored rope sponge cube to dragon egg chinese sticks balloon swallowing |

Rather than think of a series of jokes (possibly old and worn out!!!) that would fit these tricks, why don't you try this: make a list of things about each of these objects (except d'lite -- I'll address that later) and how they are behaving during the trick.
For example, why would a dollar bill float? Is it because it just doesn't have as much content as it used to? You could do several lines about that. Regarding d'lite. That's not really a trick. In fact, I would drop it like a hot potato. They sell these things in kiosks at airports in Las Vegas, for Pete's sake. They have been worse than done to death. If you can find a way of using d'lite so that it isn't apparent that you are using d'lite, then I might think about using it. There's a challenge!

Also Ollie...comedy in magic is sometimes harder than performing the magic itself. My advice with comedy is to be yourself... when practising your magic think about what is happening with the trick.. and at what moments your audience are going to react..what would you say to turn that reaction to comedy. Do you make people laugh in everyday situations with your quips if the answer is yes that you are half way there...if the answer is no... than you have a lot of work to do !!
Good luck with your magic and above all if the audience see you are having fun they will have fun with you. |

I agree entirely with Bill about D'lite, drop it unless you know beyond a shadow of a doubt you are doing something incredibly original with it that totally baffles your audience. As far as jokes are concerned...its a lot like using canned patter. Unless it comes from you, it will be like wearing an ill-fitted coat. You and your audience will both know you are trying far too hard and you'll come off looking fake in the end. Relax, master your act, then look at what might be silly, ludicrous, ironic, etc. about what is happening. How do you point that out? Consider just finding something to use as a running gag through your act. Then you don't have to have a joke for each trick. I wish you much luck!

Hello friend,
If your show will last 35 minutes and consist of six effects, then each effect will average almost 6 minutes. That's a pretty long time, unless these are complete routines that you have listed and not single-punch effects. If you want to use humor, have you considered using funny stories? For example, maybe you borrowed a clotheline from another magician, but it was too long... alan

35 minutes may be too long for a first magic show.

Is this for stage, close-up or a cabaret style performance?
