I have had this DVD for a few days now and here are my thoughts on it...
Sal Piacente: Street Monte - Three Card Monte (DVD) This DVD covers a variety of moves and subtleties pertaining to the game of 3 Card Monte. In addition to techniques, he explains why certain types of cards work best, and how to prepare the cards for the game. The techniques are explained clearly and they are very deceptive and for the most part, not technically challenging. Mr. Piacente pays great attention to details, to make the moves very convincing and nearly impossible to spot. The logic and reasoning behind all of these moves are well thought out. Aside from the moves in the actual game of Monte, there are more moves explained as "outs", in the rare case of a spectator guessing correctly. The DVD features a few bonus items, the Alabama Hustle, the Paperclip Monte, and Disk Monte. The Alabama Hustle is a nice convincer that can be used in a Monte game. The Paperclip Monte is more of a "sucker" magic effect, which is simple but effective. I am eager to try it out. And the last bonus effect, Disk Monte, was really nothing that hadn't been taught earlier in the video, just new props. The DVD is entertaining as well. There were little jokes and funny bits that Sal delivered throughout in a pretty straight-forward manner. This was the firts time I have seen any of Sal's work, and he's a pretty funny and unique character. He is definitely not your stereotypical magician. Which brings me to my next point: This DVD is not really a magic video. It teaches sleights and techniques for fooling people at the game of 3 Card Monte, but there are no complete routines taught, no real patter or story and no effects based around the Monte game (with the exception of Paperclip Monte, as I said earlier). There is also some footage of Sal on the street fooling the pants off of some helpless spectators. I know some have spoke of Daryl's Monte video as being the most thorough and best video on the subject. Well, I can't make that comparison because I haven't seen Daryl's. I can only say that the Sal Piacente: Street Monte - Three Card Monte DVD is an excellent video that I highly recommend to those with an interest in learning the game. I give it an 8 out of 10.

Nice review Danny. I was wondering why you gave it 8/10 if you think it's an excellent DVD on 3 Card Monte, is it because as you said it's not a magic video or do you think something is missing or could have been better? just curious!

Well, I gave it an 8 out of 10, because I consider that a great score. I don't think a 10 should be handed out so easily. Maybe you're right, maybe an actual routine with the Monte game or another magic effect or two throw in might have bumped it up. But like I said, in my opinion, an 8 out of 10 is a nice score.

Very good review Danny.
I've got both Daryl's and Sal's 3 Card Monte DVD's. Although Daryl's is jam packed with other monte variations and is a great DVD, if you just want to learn the monte as it is on the street then I'd go with Sal's 3 Card Monte. |

If you liked Sal's Monte dvd, but want more magic, check out his "Expert Card Magic" set. I was sold after seeing the first 2 tricks!
His Marlo Opener is a killer! You can see it at http://www.store.yahoo.com/magicmusicand......ovo.html The card magic looks impossible but is actually pretty easy. I highly recommend it.
