Hi Simon,
I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for the workshop you had at your place a few years back with Johnny Thompson. Of all of the conventions and lectures I have ever been to, Johnny's workshop was one I will never forget. It was a great evening spending time with one of the greats of magic. Thank you again. -Rich G |

Hi gang, I haven’t met Simon yet but I known Randy for a few years. It is interesting that the conversation is about Johnny Thompson.
A few years ago I was at Stan Kramien's convention and Johnny Thompson was the headliner doing a close up show lecture and then he had the closing spot on the last night show. I was booked there to bring out my book that was called “The life and magic of Billy Bishop Bish The Magish” My Dad knew Stan quite well as they grew up together as kids. David Charvet was one of Stan’s assistants and he published the book about my Dad the first Bish the Magish. I was booked there to do a close up show lecture and I was on the first nights show on the stage. Let me tell you it was cold… You could see your breath coming out of your mouth. The show was in a large barn like structure that housed Stan Kramien's illusion show equipment. As I remember - in those days it was held in March. And in OR - March can be cold… And it was cold… The heater was one guy in the back lighting matches… Johnny Thompson did a great close up lecture but the magic for me was watching him perform the closing spot on the last show of the convention. (Did I tell you it was cold?) He did over an hour of time. Had the audience (in winter coats) in stitches with laughter and got 5 curtain calls with 5 standing ovations. It was one of the best acts I have seen in magic and he performed under very hard conditions to a magicians audience and he got 5 standing ovations… I also grew up in magic watching my Dad and Jay Marshall perform shows like this in the summertime doing ILL county and state fairs.. Shows that I was later booked to perform at as well after I grew up. Moments like in that cold barn like structure - for me was one of the real magic moments of our magic world that we get to see from time to time. It was like the first time I saw Dai Vernon do his wand spin vanish of a ball. He did it for me not one foot away from me and the ball vanished. That was real magic to me! And so was Johnny Thompson… I hope you found this interesting… Glenn Bishop http://www.mrhypnotist.org

Johnny is one of the true greats - he does it all so perfectly. The first time I saw him on stage I actually cried - it was so wonderful. He is one of our national treasures - to the guys and gals who haven't seen him live - make it a mission to do so!

Johnny started off showing us some of his great card work, an effect using two jokers that find two selected cards, ( I can't remember the name of the effect at the moment ), and ways of getting out of situations if you lose the selected card. He then asked each one of us what were our favorite cards effects, and I said, MacDonald's Aces. Somewhere Johnny did a deck switch that alot of us missed, and went in to doing MacDonald's Aces with what we thought was the same deck he was just using for another effect. I was completely fooled! He did various card effects, and talked about his days as a member of the "Harmonicats". He talked about hanging out at the Magic Castle with Dai Vernon and Charlie Miller. Then he did his three balls and net routine, which was fantastic. To top off the evening, and what I thought was the highlight of the workshop, Johnny did his impersonation of Dai Vernon, which he does perfectly, of Dai doing a card trick with a volunteer from the audience. Even though I've never had the opportunity to meet Dai Vernon, Johnny made me feel like Mr. Vernon was right there, he did it in a way with respect to "The Professor". As I said, it is THE workshop that I will never forget. Below I have put a link to a pic of Johnny and myself after the workshop. http://sophia.smith.edu/~rgilbert/JThompson.jpg -Rich G |
