The Elastic Aptitude Test (EAT) has been designed to measure the distance your imagination can stretch. Unlike traditional aptitude tests, which reward a humdrum command of facts, EAT rewards Flexible Agile Thinking (FAT). Now then, how flexible is your mind?

Part III: Science
In each group, choose the one item that does not belong with the other four. Be prepared to defend your choices.

1. a) celery b) pineapple c) strawberry d) persimmon e) currant

2. a) condor b) raven c) flamingo d) heron e) piranha

3. a) fir b) chrysanthemum c) cypress d) beech e) yew

4. a) deer b) dog c) flea d) wolf e) rat

5. a) sand b) rock c) Princess telephone d) water e) soil

1) E. Currant - I don't like them hence doesn't fit.

2) C. Flamingo - All the others have dignity (imho) and I don't like flamingos

3) B. Chrysanthemum - I can easily speak/spell the others but this one is a little nastier. Add to that that I don't care for it Smile

Bonus points for the fact that all the rest can be spoken (or slightly misspoken) and give double meanings. Fir - Fur, cypress - supress, Beech - beach, yew - you

4) B. Dog - This is the only thing in the list I'd personally have as a pet.

5) C. Princess Telephone - All the rest I've ingested at some point.

First 3 letters of each forms a word in the English language, except for strawberry.

2. a) condor b) raven c) flamingo d) heron e) piranha

Dropping the last letter of each forms a word in the English language, except for piranha.

I've heard of the verb "flee", but never the verb "flea".

For #1 the answer is persimmon. It is the only one if injested chronically can lead to bezoars.

For #5 these are all items found in a landfill and the Princess Telephone will remain intact the longest.

2) Raven.. not from the same climate. Ravens tend to live where it's cooler. And in another continent. Smile

4) Dog... not found wild/living in my back yard.

Answers:

1. (a) Celery is the only word that doesn't have a doubled letter.

2. (e) Piranha does make a new word when its last letter removed.

3. (b) Chrysanthemum does not have a homophone.

4. (c) Flea does not form a word when read backward.

5. (c) Princess telephone cannot be used as a verb.
