What is your favorite video for learning kidshow magic?
I think mine would be Patrick Page's Funny Business for Kid shows. This guy really makes me laugh! |

HI,
My favorite is split bettween. The Terry Herbert Video and David Ginn Kidbiz 1 I think the worst Kidshow video I have seen (for the performance not the production) is the Dan Harlan Pack small Tape. Phillip |

Quentin Reynolds has a video called 5 Minutes with a Pocket Hankerchief that is a riot. He really gets kids into a frenzy with this routine.
You can see a sample online at magicsmith.com: http://www.magicsmith.com/cgi-bin/webcar......CODE=468 Patrick Page is good too. Maybe it's just me, but it seems british accents can make funny lines funnier. |

Hi Flourish dude,
Personaly I thought that the show just did not cut it. Most of the laughter came from adults (not seen but watching in the backround.) I did not think that he really captured the children and moved them along with him. I also thought that his show persona was way to childish for the children in the audience and some of the effects where rather weak particarly "Shake it up" The method was just too obvious Have you seen the Terry Herbert tape? Although Terry uses facial mugging ext he also reduces this depending on the ages he is working for and the magic is both strong and funny but without being stupid. These are just my opinions and matter very little at the end of the day. But for me Dan was no David Ginn,Terry Herbert, Sammy Smith or BJ Hickman. Phillip |

No, I agree he is no David Ginn, Ect..
But I think you need to look past his style and make the routines yours. I would never preform for kids the way he did. But there are items from the tape that I have used and went over very well. lets see, I used the ideas with the Sponge ball to paper bag. (not sure if I will do this again or not I added a growing sponge ball to fill the bag) The balloon routine(I had changed a lot of it by adding a lot of Dan Garrett's gag's, and taking out the octapuss (unless it is a boy). the first balloon is the world fastest dog where I forget to put on the legs. Then I go into my dog jokes) I had a lot of fun with the milkshake routine (still do this one as a sucker type effect) The dove pan to suckers at the end I still do as a encore. This allows the kids to come up get a sucker, a party bag from me and pet the rabbit. Some say this is anticlimatic but I think it works well to end the show.( I always do this) most of these I have changed but they started from the tape. I also do the herman ball routine for kids.(from his stand up tape) I think the way I do the routine is great for kids. It has a story so you don't loose them. Again all based from the tape, But not the same. Where could I see the Terry H. Tapes?

Hi,
Most childrens UK entertainers would not give away sweets or edibles, Mums over here do not like it. Many make a point of aking if you give sweets ext to the children. I agree that there was stuff on the tape that could be adapted. But Nothing really Grabbed me. Most other childrens ents tapes I have had something I really liked or I enjoyed or learn't from the performers style But for me tape was a damp sqib. Each to his own I suppose. glad you got something out of it anyway. Perhaps it's Just me. Phillip |

Wow,
I agree with, "not really pleased with Harlen's tape." Now I have all of Ginns tapes and it is difficult to select one over the other. Each are unique, in they way. The question asked, "What is your favorite video for learning kidshow magic?" Well, for style and form in handling a kids audience, I like BJ Hickman's Magic Show Vol. 1, because his style is simliar to mine and really goes all out. It's not a teaching video but a visual learning for how a kid show should flow. The interaction, the ease of dealing with the audience. For teaching, Ginn is very skilled and one can learn a lot from him and his tapes. For real young kids, Sammy Smith's tapes are good. Now Patrick Pages's book mentioned above is an absoulte requirement for a pro when dealing with kids. Although Charlie Frye's "Eccentricks" is not developed for kids, some great physical comedy can be adapted to kids shows. I loved the three tapes form Ginn, Smith and Taylor, "Komedy Kid-Show Klinic." It covered a broad range of how-tos. The lecture notes that were developed by Taylor are also good. You should also have in your collection, Fiscus book, "Birthday Magicians Handbook" and Ginn's "KidBiz" Above all, you must (like) LOVE performing for kids to be really good at it.

I was watching tapes last night. I reviewed
Dave Ginn kids show 2 Pat Page funny biz Dan Garrett kid show I think all three are great I rediscovered some great things on Dan Garrett's tape. I like how he builds to the rabbit in the hat. His show was taped with really small kids at a daycare. So to answere the question it is hard. there are so many great kids show preformers. One thing to keep in mind we are adults and what might seem really dumb in our minds are really funny to them. I think the key is to be very visual and have fun!! Like most any area of magic if your audiance likes you they will like what you do even if you mess up! What do you guys think is is a good outline for a kids show?

Dan Garrett does have some good ideas(I do his Karate balloon gag and multiplying bananas)
However, I question Dan's wizard character for the really young ones (daycare). Maybe this has been covered on another topic, but I think dressing up as a character such as a wizard can be intimidating for little kids. Especially if you are a big guy like Dan. |

HI,
Like Dan I Dress as a Wizard for kid shows (no false beards, wigs ext just the costume). I have had little bother with it myself and I gain a lot of shows by dressing up this way. it's far more likely that they will start crying if you use a real loud shouting effect in my experience. Normaly I have a fair bit of attack and upness in my kidshow character. but for real young uns 2 - 4 I tend to lose the attack and use softer tones like Sammy Smith. I also like to be sitting or kneeling (without my pointy hat on) when they come to lower my hieght from their perspective. I then put my hat on as a part of the show by saying, "Now my name is Phil The Wizard and this is my magic hat, sometimes people laugh at me when I put my hat on and I get emabaraced. You wont laugh at me will you? OH good." I go to put on the hat but pull it off just before it's on insisting that someone laughed this hat of and off it repeated as they laugh until eventualy I get it on and leave it on. This makes the children laugh at the hat that might otherwise frighten them. Phillip |

I dress just like every show. I do not do a wizzard because I don't want to be seen as one.In fact most of my magicial effects are shown as puzzles, slight of hand or I use other things such as smiles to make the magic happen.
anyway any ideas about the outline???

I don't do puzzles I make the effect into a puzzle. Kind of like on the new Sankey best of video. He does a mis-made bill type routine and says I have a little puzzle for you. Kind of like," I am not sure how this works but it does just like this". After all magical effect are just puzzles, if they are tring to figure them out. I don't ever set up a challenge for myself and I would never recommend doing this. Example.
I do a paper tear. I say, "Have you ever seen the trick where a magician tears up a piece of paper and puts it back together? Lets try it." I tear up the paper " then you have to say the magic words --I hope this works, I hope this works" and the paper does not go back. Then I attempt to do it again and fail. " I know what the problem is I need some help" pull 2 kids up with you. Give 1 the paper to hold in their fist and the other kid is going to get all the wand gags. After this not working I say, " I know what the problem is you know magic is not a special word or a special wand. It is much more simple than that. Magic is something like a smile or a laugh. If you can make someone smile or laugh than you have just done some real magic. Lets try, I want everyone to smile as big as you can. Even the Big kids in the back (Adults) now don't that feel good? Everyone take your smile and throw it up here." With this I pull out a 25' mouth coil from the wad of paper in the kid's hand and hand it to the other kid to pull out. At the end of the coil the napkin is restored. " Wow there is lots of magic in this room today"----End.

I think "20 minutes with a balloon"
by Docc Hilford is my favorite tape. It also teaches a framework for all magic shows. Amazing that the guy can do a whole show on somebody elses throw away gags. Cheers, James ps I also like Dan Garrett's kid show vid. I hate his costuime though.

I also can vouch for the Terry Herbert tape (try Magic Books By Post in England - they bought up all the Supreme books and videos when the company closed.) The Dan Garrett video's got some very good stuff, and Quentin Reynolds pocket handkerchief routine is a great backup to have handy, even if you don't program it.
I, too have some reservations about Dan Harlans tape: I don't care for the 'getting them screaming' stuff, he dumps every thing in a ditch bag - the reset would be terrible, and the expendables! In a 25 min show (which is rather short, to my mind - it was, after all supposed to be a birthday party for a ten year old - their attention span is a bit longer than that!) he uses: 4 Milky Way bars, 1 large lollipop, plus lollipops for everyone, giveaway party hats, noisemakers and 8 balloons! Thats a lot of stuff! I made up his 'This Century', but I haven't tried it yet - I sort of fear that the slightest breeze would blow the trick, so to speak, and the load in his milkshake trick is just stupid - and kids aren't! On the bright side, I loved his balloon act, and immediately stole chunks of it, and I like his Goshman and Sucker Suckers routine. So I got some stuff I can use out of it. I'd like to know more about the Docc Hilford tape - I've seen it on Brian Flora's website, but it's very expensive, so I'm chary about blowing that much on one tape: tell me more! Cheers, Bill

is there a web site for this place?
BAck to Dan Harlen. I hated the sucker routine. the one with the large sucker that is. The Goshman was ok i did it in 1 show and pulled it from there. The ballon routine I used parts also. I thought the milkshae routine was great. I have done this and I even have the adults think it's real. I guess it is al in the presentation. I don't think it's about the final load it's more abou the fun within the routine. I made the props and they look real.I also carry them in a cooler to help sell the ice cream!! I goes as far as to put in a ice pack, but this also helps my balloon stay freash on hot days. I will agree the screaming part is not for me!! They do yell in my show aka in the "sucker" wandering cd routine. and the silk on my back routine. Dan has them scream just to be loud. Nope! not for me. I agree the give away are a bit much. anyway it all goes to say you take what you can use by changing it and making it work for you. I think the tape was worth the $ to me because of the few ideas I got from it and worked into me own stlye and show.
