Hi, I'm new to Magic Café. I grew up on the island of Kauai in Hawaii and keep track of the news there. I saw this story in The Garden Island newspaper (once worked for them)about 3 shows done by Jean Hugard there in 1916 and thought you might enjoy it.

Great stuff DaKine! Hugard did a Bullet Catch effect? Wow! As his finale to those Hawaii shows, he performed the Birth of a Pearl illusion which he took with him to the states. Here's some interesting history on Birth of a Pearl:

Hugard even had a mishap with the bullet catch once.
In an article titled "The Jean Hugard Story" in the November 1959 issue of _Linking Ring_ Milbourne Christopher wrote: -----quote----- He was wounded once, on the opening night of his second tour of New Zealand. At the Wellington Theatre, one of the four local riflemen dropped a handful of shot in his rifle. The pellets penetrated Jean's shirtfront and chest. After the show he pried them out with a penknife. -----unquote----- _Linking Ring_, Vol, 39 No. 9, November 1959, page 53 On page 173 of Christopher's _Panorama of Magic_ there's a picture of Hugard doing the trick, but the picture looks like an illustration, not a photo, and shows the riflemen standing maybe 20 feet from Hugard--which was probably artistic license since an actual photo showing Jean and the riflemen would probably have had to stretch across two pages of the paper Your armchair magic historian, Sonny
