Whilst at work this afternoon, I stumbled across Paul Brook's new podcast Ask Paul. I was a little too excited to wait until I got home and onto wifi and so, threw caution to the wind, and downloaded it using my data (rock and roll huh? ;-) ) I'm really glad I did.
The podcast is structured differently to those I'm used to and bases its content entirely upon questions posed by its listeners (via the web site or Paul's Facebook page). In this first episode, Paul talks about the difficulties when performing close-up mentalism and how it differs from stage performances. The pitfalls and advantages are spoken about in depth and obviously come from many years of experience in both areas. He also talks a little about the differences between mentalism and mental magic, and how one sometimes can become the other. The overall tone of the podcast is one of conversation and his ideas are offered up thoughtfully and intelligently. But more importantly, they are offered up as opinions and not absolutes. In fact Paul actively encourages people with opposing views to post them on the web site. I personally love this level of openness, as it's my belief that is the best way to grow and expand upon our knowledge (in real life, as well as in our world of performing). As you can probably tell, I thoroughly enjoyed the first episode and eagerly await next weeks. Which reminds me, I nearly forgot to mention that it's a weekly podcast. (Weekly!!!) Anyway, here's a link to it. I hope others enjoy it as much as I have. http://www.heknows.co.uk/episode-1-stage......ntalism/ Cheers. |

Will check it out, need a fix for a mentalism podcast until the 3mentalists can all meet in the same universe to make a new one. Thank you for the heads up!

I miss the 3 Mentalists podcast and I always found The Magicians Podcast to be interesting and inspiring. I've really enjoyed the first two Ask Paul episodes and I think episode three should land tomorrow. I met Paul for the first time in Blackpool this weekend and he's a great guy (that also knows how to party!) . I think the podcast is in good hands.

Paul is quite entertaining and obviously knows his business.
I particularly liked his justification for using 'Psychological Testing Apparatus:' "The key is to have a creative justification for what it is and normalize those things." I'm sure this little nugget has been around for decades, but his mentioning it has inspired me to label all my psychic apparatuses, besides my already NIP NFPA AIP labeled ticksheets. Keep it up Paul & THANKS! Cheers, larry |

Five weeks in and I'm really impressed with the quality and consistency of this podcast. An hour is quite a long time for a single person podcast but each episode has been full of relevant and interesting information and absolutely no filler. I'd like to submit a question but can't think of anything out of the obvious so far. I must try harder

Nice one. I've been wanting a weekly podcast in any area but great to have found a magic related one. Downloading the first cast now from the comments I won't be disappointed.

Thanks for all the kind words of support about the podcast chaps. I can't believe that I've just released the 7th episode today, where does the time go? Also it's the first real business question on the podcast this week and I share how to double your fee AND boost your search engine rank.
Stay tuned in Cheers, Paul

I'm thoroughly enjoying each episode. I thought the amount of solid business advise in the latest episode was astonishing. There're so many tips and hints on how to get the most out of every gig and look professional whilst doing it. Each time I download an episode, I know I'm going to get a lot out of it before I even start to listen. If I could put page markers in podcasts, these would be full of them (*insert riffling sound here ;-). )
Seven episodes in and the quality is still amazing. |

Hmmm... definitively a suspicious accent from the guest from "Puerto Rico" a few weeks ago... he also managed to mispronounce Puerto Rico.
Wonder why I feel like eating pizza right now. |

Hi Paul,
I listened to #1 and have to congratulate you on a very thorough and down to earth factual podcast. Will definitively listen to the others. As the long as the questions remain relevant, I am sure your answers will due them justice. I am not a pro, but do enjoy listening to advice to professional market. I never even considered the difficulty of projection in a loud environment and how your voice would eventually give out. Also a lot of the glamour of pro magic is reduced down to its common denominators of the "business". Not something a non pro would be privy too until they discovered it for themselves. For pros and non pros, the podcast is on point with material and the production value makes it easy to listen to. It is also a bite sized 45 mins to an hour long. |

Just not to multiply threads on the same subject, apart from Paul's podcast and 3 mentalists - what other mentalism listening material can one advice?

There are a couple of magic podcasts that I listen to but I'm not aware of any other mentalism ones apart from the ones you've already mentioned.

Hey guys
Can't believe that the Podcast is on Episode 20 already, just six more episodes and it will be half a year since I started, which seems crazy! I've got at least another fourteen questions ready to answer, but don't be shy about asking your own questions, I will get around to answering them all; although it will be a while before they get answered due to the queue of current questions. Loving all of the support too, thanks guys There have been some seriously great discussions on numerous social media groups, and while I try and get involved with them all I don't always have time, sadly. Regarding the extra content, I may be bundling them together in the future, but for now they are simply available with each episode. Right, off to record this week's episode! Cheers, Paul

Thanks Paul! Loving the podcast. I was late in discovering it, but have since been devouring every episode. Just now at episode 29 and almost caught up. At the time of typing this, there are 32 out. I have even submitted 2 questions now and can't wait to hear you answer with your thoughts. I have been sharing the podcast with as many magicians and mentalists that I can, as I think it is very good stuff.
Thanks again! |
