What is the most practical way of studying illusions systematically for the beginner? Sound advice please.

Buy Osborne's Black Book, It gives you a variety of illusions and some theory on them. If you like what you read and see, then if you want to focus look at Osborne's Classics or Halloween Illusions.

Then start with the illusion builders theory by Woodbury, Steinmeyer, or Wakeling.

Center Cutting, Dinner for Two, Mignon, New Wave Modern Cabinet, are what I would like to consider to build. Each $25, then I would need to spend $100 for 4.
I would like to ask, which book has these 4 illusions? Then I can have many many illusions more!!! Bargain!

There is no plan available for the Origami illusion!
You can only buy the illusion from John Gaughan or Wellington.

Thank you very much Mr. Rafael, but I view lot of sites, maybe 20 with Origami illusion, and I not sure that all of these illusions are made by Wellington and Gaughan. What doyou say about this? Maybe you know who made Origami for D. Copperfield?

Classics Vol 1 has New Modern Cabinet plans as well as other Modern Cabinet Plans but the others I don't know or at least remember. If you build one, you can sell it and get your money back for the plans. With Illusions, don't go cheap, or bargain basement, you will lose many times. I know, I lost money going this route. (Every now and then I win, but not often...Alomst like a lottery ticket.)

Most likely, there are Origami illusions which were/are not authorized.

I know this one was patented, so the illusion plans are in the patent office.

As with all illusions on an 8 1/2 x 11 page, they are good but if you are going to build it, get the individual larger plan. Many times there is more information and the information is easier to read.

These books gives the reader a good look at the different types and versions that have been produced. They give a more detailed insight to the study of illusions.

Is the Smoke Chamber illusion in any of the Osborne Books? I know he sells the plans separately, but if it's in a book, I'd rather just get that. Thanks for the help.

Hi Seth,

I have a couple of the books but no plans. In the books, the plans are there, but mainly to give you the general idea of the illusion. I would hope that the plans give you a lot more detail. For any of the more complex illusions, I would spend the $25.00 to get the plan kit just to get better details.

Maybe someone else can write and confirm that the plans give you greater details.

Just so you know, Paul's plans aren't much different from the plans in the books.

He reccommends building cardboard mockups and so do I. You can get a much better grasp of the construction before you cut wood.

You need to make the cardboard one as if was wood. If you just use a cardboard box for size, you'll be cheating yourself out of an educational experience.

Any advice as to where to get enough cardboard to build a mock-up for a larger illusion? And what thickness if this is an option?

SteelLuvMagic, check with department and appliance stores- they'll often let you grab scrap cardboard. Refrigerator boxes are your friend Most corrugated cardboard is thin enough to represent lauan plywood or veneer. Use double or triple thickness for 1/8"-1/4" plywood or thicker. You can also buy 4'x8' sheets of cardboard in any thickness up to an inch or two (though scrap is cheaper.) For metal blades, I'd use a double thickness of cardstock posterboard.

For scrap lumber, check with the foreman on a construction site. It also helps if you've got a friend or relative who's in construction (my brother-in-law is carting a scrapped solid wood door off a site for me to use as a new workbench.)

This may be a dumb question, but here goes:

When building cardboard mock-ups, I find it tricky to cut straight edges of longer lengths; I typically use a utility knife and a straight edge, which invariably moves or slips, preventing a good, straight edge.

So here's my question: Would it dull a table saw blade to run cardboard through?

I use a carbide blade on my table saw to cut aluminum all the time. It should handle cardboard just fine.

I would buy Coreplastic at a sign shop or plastic supply house. It is like cardboard only it has much more strength. It runs about $10 for a 4x 8 sheet and is available in colors also.
