A very good primer for building effects is the book, "The Make-Up of Magic" by Micky Hades. It covers everything from wood work to crafting with metal to finishing with paint and decals. There are currently two ads for this title on the big auction site right now (forum rules don't allow me to post a direct link).

Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic has quite a few boxes for productions and vanishes. There aren't detailed shop plans but there are illustrations and descriptions of how they work.
There are also quite a few patents for magic apparatus many of them from the early 1900s to the present. A search for "Illusion" and "Conjuring" may turn up interesting finds to inspire you. Kevin |

Hi Fellow Magi,
May I suggest the Jack Hughes World of Magic series of three volumes. They do not give detailed workshop measurements etc. but do give more than enough information on general construction. Excellent books! Best magical wishes, Lester |
