I literally just got a phone call from a T.V. Talkshow producer and they are bringing me on as their featured guest. I will be interviewed and be performing as well.
This will all happen on Thursday, March 16th, which is just before I start a 7 month tour. I have done newspaper interviews & radio interviews in the past, but this is literally my first time doing a T.V. Show - So, I am both excited and nervous. Much more nervous than excited, for sure! Like most, I wear all the hats so I have no one to turn to for advice or suggestions. However, I do own EVERYTHING from MindPro and I'm frantically reviewing how to be a good media guest. If anyone has experience doing this kind of thing, I'd appreciate any suggestions you might want to share. Thanks! |

Congratulations cbguy!
I've noticed the host is usually most interested in doing all the talking and filling any silence. It is like performing for someone with Attention Deficit Disorder. Don't expect them to react like a normal person. If you get a chance, tell the cameraman or director the area of shot you want or the camera will do an extreme closeup that will cut of any action if you move out of the shot and will preclude any sort of misdirection or framing of the effect. Relax and have fun if you can. That will come across more than having everything go as you would like. -Mary Mowder |

At this point you CAN think about it too much. You were asked for a reason. Don't forget that.
The thing to keep in mind is are you there to entertain or promote? Make certain to structure your appearance to that goal. It is a common misconception that the two are one in the same.

Thanks Mary & Danny,
Thanks so much for your insight! My goal is to promote. Entertaining (magic or juggling) is secondary, in my opinion, in this situation., but they are going to want some of it. This is an opportunity to reach a boat-load of potential clients. I will be doing this entire thing "in character". My performing character is a wild man, crazy-fun & off the cuff (which is very well rehearsed to come off that way). I've been at this game full-time since '98 and performed in nearly every kind of venue. Now, at 42 years old. I would love to settle in a theatre, preferably in Branson. I head out on my 2017 tour from March 22 - Oct 29. During this time, I need to find a way to start making some contacts in Branson and figure out this next stage of the game. It's an exciting time, right now. |

Cbguy, be sure to get a copy of the recording. Publicity means a lot. Place it on your website, YouTube, your Facebook Fan Page, etc. I would love to see a copy of it to.

I just got all the final confirmation for this appearance. I was able to use the information from MindPro's book on "Press & Media" and set up my spot the way he suggested that would benefit me, from a business perspective, better, which means: They are going to interview me first and I will do a very brief performance at the end. My time slot will run for 15 minutes. That is a long time. I was also able to supply them with the questions they will be asking me, which is absolutely awesome.
Here is what I sent back based on what they wanted from me: Name as it should appear on-screen: I generally keep myself in the shadows, therefore, I've not posted my name or performing name here. Website to share: They will be sharing my website on-screen Five interview questions: 1. What separates me from all the other performers? 2. What are my goals as a performer? 3. Where do you typically perform? 4. How long have you been performing? 5. What made you decide to Juggling Knives & Walk on Broken Glass? I will need about 6 feet to juggle the knives while walking on the broken glass. I do this on a platform that is 2 feet off the ground and has a reservoir to house the broken glass so it doesn’t make a mess. I understand that this is a “live” segment not pre-recorded, will I be able to get a copy of the footage, as well? If you need anything from me, what-so-ever, just let me know. I am extremely easy going. Once I go into character, I’m a completely different person and much more fun than my regular self ; ) I will be in character the entire segment. This is going to be a blast!!! After it airs next week and I've got the footage, I'll probably share it here. Thanks again for your help and insights. |

Yes, I agree congratulations cbguy. Glad you've found my book to be of assistance as you approach this opportunity. While I understand what sortout says and his perspective, I don't feel it is the approach I would suggest for a newbie or novice to press and media as I detail in the book. The first time out the better prepared, confident, understanding of the environment and in control you are the better.
I like that you have made the determination first and foremost to promote and utilize from a a business perspective and opportunity. Remember their default as hosts when interviewing a magician will be to go to you to perform, so you do need to take control and steer it to execute your desired approach first, then build to the performance. Just because you provide them with specific questions (especially for a long segment) doesn't mean they won't ask other questions or have room for spontaneity, so stay on your toes. I must say 15 minutes seems very odd for a television segment. Is this cable or will the 15 minutes be done over two segments with a spot-break in between? Do you know? As for recording the segment, first set your home DVR or recorder, but you can also make a request to the producer assigned to you to ask if they can record the segment for you. Take a USB stick, blank DVD or other source for them to be able to use. Also the segment may also likely be fed to their website and social media feeds as well, which may allow you to gain a link. Multiple ways to insure you get it. It's great that they will be keying your website on screen as these days many prefer to simply say that your info will be on their (show or station's) website so people have to visit their site to get the link to yours. Very nice. Again, approaching it as I say in the book can often get it done this preferred way. My first thought as well was about your "wild man" character ("My performing character is a wild man, crazy-fun & off the cuff"). Make sure it plays to their audience. Too weird can be off-putting to hosts that realize they don't know how to deal with it or respond, so just be aware and careful. Sounds like you have positioned yourself well and it sounds like you have a good handle on it. Let me know if I can be of help. Definitely keep us posted. So far we have generated over $560,000 in free publicity from purchaser's of this book using these methods and concepts offered, and this is just from those that have reported back to me (in actuality there are many I haven't heard from so the actual number is likely more than double this figure). This is very exciting! Well done! |

Congratulations cbguy. Here is a great thread from a while back that speaks about publicity and television appearances plays into it.
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=44 I too own Mindpro's books and have been able to incorporate what I learned into improving my approach to television appearances as well as the associated opportunities. When formulating potential questions that a performer submits in advance of the interview, one should also consider what the needs of the interviewer are. Likely, they are trying to capture/hold an audience. Therefore questions like "what was the most daring, thrilling, interesting, unusual thing you ever encountered?" should be considered - choosing the most appropriate one for your particular experience. Perhaps even "share a time when something went very wrong?" Also, consider the target audience that the program likely appeals to so that you can use descriptions that best appeal to those individuals. |

Many learn, for others nothing has changed. |

Your advice on Branson is a Gold mine and will save people a lot of trouble and dissatisfaction if only they can set their ego aside and be open to learning from experience : )

T.V. show took place this morning and some things were changed around. While they did give me a little more than 5 minutes, I really wanted to do more talking to promote my business, but when they handed me the script a few minutes before we went on they decided to talk for about 15 seconds about the event where I'll be performing, then, they wanted a some magic followed by juggling knives while walking on broken glass.
So, at the end, they had my performing name on the screen and a link to my website on their page with the T.V. piece. I will pimp it in all of my promotional material and maybe try to get back on for more of an interview at another time. I understand they need viewers, so by playing the game and being easy to work with, I'm pretty confident they will welcome me back. After it was over, the hots and other T.V. people in the studio we're taking photos and could;t stop talking about it. I'm not one for having my ego stroked, so the new goal is to get back on and talk business. |

Seeing a performance will certainly get more interest from their viewers than talking business. If the performances went well it will be a positive even if it was not as you hoped/expected.
Thanks for letting us know how it went. -Mary Mowder |

I just did another thing on television. This was on location and they aired 8+ minutes from my show.
No interview, but this is good stuff to use for booking purposes. AND...today, I have to meet a reporter at her office. They are doing a Newspaper story on me. So, for everyone who's been asking, you can see the T.V. appearences by visiting my website www.VillageIdiotMagic.com I will keep you posted on the newspaper story. |

One thing that puzzles me is why magicians feel the need to make spectators look foolish during tricks.
