Hello. My name's Jim. I'm about to introduce myself in what is probably a long-windy process but I'm at work and it's Monday, so...
About a year ago my wife is pregnant with our first child. At some point our evenings basically consist of laying around watching Netflix and playing cards. I bought a deck of something called Astra playing cards from the drug store and remember thinking how awful they felt. (Tangent) In highschool me and my buddy were big nerds. Constantly getting into various nerdy things. At some point we saw some kid on MTV throwing playing cards at a cow pen, and decided that it was immensely interesting so we took it up. Eventually got good enough to do all the cool things like throwing them into fruit, on top of large buildings, and across vast distances. I mainly used Bicycle cards because they felt the best to throw. Cut to- After the baby is born I eventually have a little more time to get out and about, and we end up going to friends houses and having game nights. I think to myself "lets ditch the garbage cards I bought and get some nice quality Bicycle cards", which rapidly lead to the stuff at Walmart, which rapidly led to me buying some Black Ghosts, which lead to Theory 11, Ellusionist, card collecting, dabbling in slight of hand at work, to performing for my wife, to her parents, to this past weekend which was performing magic for my entire family and friends at my daughters first birthday party. I was doing a bunch of "easy" tricks for the kids, and a mixture of some more complex tricks for the adults which I was purposely timid about and kept kinda monkeying up. Then as a complete mind-blower for the next half hour I did Two Card Monte, a trick with a marked deck/invisible deck, the new ellusionist ACAAN, topped off with RED Pill by Chris Ramsay for my mother in law, which left her crying as I sorta worked in a piece of memorabilia to commemorate our little Queen of Heart's birthday. So I'm all in. I love it. I want to learn. I want to practice. I want to spend way too much money on a million tricks and decks. Figured a good place would be here. |

Welcome to our motley crew~!
Your final paragraph caught my eye. There are a few "things" that you need to KNOW! You cannot BUY TRICKS. A TRICK, like music, only exists while it is while it is being PERFORMED. You can buy PROPS and/or SECRETS in a DVD, or BOOK. Using the PROP, or SECRET,you can PERFORM a TRICK. If you PERFORM the TRICK well, using your PERSONALITY, and a good PRESENTATION, you may ENTERTAIN someone. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>MAGIC IS N O T INHERENTLY ENTERTAINING.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<(WRITE THAT 100 TIMES ON THE WALL!!!) Many years ago, S. H. SHARPE said it very well: "...those who think that magic consists of doing tricks, are strangers to magic. TRICKS ARE ONLY THE CRUDE RESIDUE FROM WHICH THE LIFEBLOOD OF MAGIC HAS BEEN DRAINED." Since you are really a beginner, buy a copy of "Royal Road to Card Magic" (Jean Hugard). It was published 50+ years ago, and, is STILL IN PRINT! I recommended it to a young lad whom I was mentoring, almost 50 years ago. A few years later, he "turned" professional, and, NEVER BOUGHT ANOTHER CARD BOOK! He got along just fine with "RRCM". Eventually, you may want to get Giobbi's books, or Lorayne's books, but "RRCM" will start you off, just fine. (Save that $$$$$, to buy the new baby's shoes!)

Hello "dere" (Upper Michigan "dialect"!)
Mary is a dear friend, of many years. --She KNOWS! Yes, Expert Card Technique is fine, but RRCM is better for a beginner! It begins with the basic fundamentals, and progresses... Hugard was an "Aussie", and, wrote clearly and concisely. After each new sleight, you learn a trick that uses that sleight. There have been some new "moves" developed since Jean Hugard's time, but ya gotta start with fundamentals! I'm definitely not a cardician, but, I knew most of the top card men, like Alex Elmsley, Charlie Miller, Ricky Jay, Dai Vernon, Jon Racherbaumer, et al, for the last 50 years. Magic is "5% sleight of hand technique, 5% esoteric principles of science, 5% perceptual illusion, and EIGHTY-FIVE PERCENT P S Y C H O L O G Y"! It aint WHAT ya do, it's HOW ya do it! O
