And if so.... what would be the reason for introducing a steel ball in the first place? I was thinking about maybe introducing it as a pinball? I have an effect routine idea and am just gathering recon on ideas using a steel ball for now. Cheers and thanks in advance for the ideas!

None come to mind but you might get some ideas looking up Paul Gertner and Lou Serrano

When a bouncy ball falls to the table with a dull heavy thud, the change to steel can be very effective.

About twelve years ago my friend, the late James Robinson, released an effect title the Buoyant Ball Bearing. It was based on an effect that Bob White and Roger Klause had seen the Professor perform at a lecture many years ago. With some input from Bob, James was able to have the props manufactured. It is a very interesting, and simple, little effect.
James passed away, unfortunately, several years ago, but you can still find the trick in stock at a few online dealers. I have two and am holding onto them. If you are interested I suggest getting one because once they are gone they will no longer be available again. Here is a link to the thread from when it was released: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=109 |

Bowling Ball from mini briefcase. I think Marc DeSouza had this effect in his 2001 book.

I've had an idea swimming around for along time, at the end of a coin routine you introduce a cup saying you would love to show them the next trick but have forgotten your balls. You then glance at the coins, simply pick them up and roll them into metal balls then and continue with a short one cup and balls routine or something like that at the end of which you simply flatten them back out again, I just haven't worked out any of the details yet!

There was also a trick 10 or 15 years ago using the copper silver plot but with a silver and brass ball. At the end a giant (pool ball size) steel ball was produced. It was heavy!
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

There is one that I put together a while ago. I have a video of it on youtube but it's not very good quality as you can't see the coin I use in the routine very well. The steel ball bearing comes into play when I squeeze the coin and it turns into the ball bearing and then I slap it on the table and it becomes a coin again.

Shattering Coins (vintage Repro 71) is a fabulous vanish of multiple coins from a fistful of coins and ball bearings.

In addition to the aforementioned classic Ball & Tube, perhaps you could also integrate the old Steel Ball Thru Brass Bolt into an overall routine. (The small steel balls in each case are the same size).
Has anyone ever manufactured a "mini" Ball Vase using a similarly sized (small) steel ball/pinball/ball bearing? That might fit in nicely with the above pair of effects. Maybe finish off with Johnson Products' "The Mint," turning your small steel ball into a featureless metal disk, and then into a half dollar (which would make for a natural segue from your ball bearing routine into a coin routine...).

Given the similarity between a ball and a ring, a ring on rope routine could end with the ring returning to its natural state as a large ball bearing,
or, alternately, a ball could be flattened and stretch into a ring. if using a table with a cloth covering, an old method could be used to cause the ball to roll across the table top, perhaps to 'avoid' being seized by the performer.

I remember an effect with a ball bearing and a paper bag. The premise was based on a bullet catch idea and at the end.you produced a large ball. I think it was David Harkey.

Craig Petty has an effect on his DVD "Split Happens" called "Sponge". It is a sort of a which hand effect with a coin and a sponge ball but the final phase he puts both in the same hand and they "Melt together" to become a steel ball bearing.
I was having a lot of problems with a mini Don Alan style chop cup. (The chop ball kept bouncing back up from the close up pad). They are fairly heavy balls too but I realized that my bearings from my ball and tubes would do the special thing and I started using those with the ball bearing I purchased for "Sponge" as my final. It is a mini version of the Gertner idea, but one chop cup rather than a full cups and balls routine.
