I happen to love it. Nothing better and more organic than borrowing a George and doing something incredible to blow people"s minds. But we may soon kiss that privledge goodbye. Thanks to a senator whose initials happen to be J.M. Google it. He wants to ELIMINATE the one dollar bill and replace it with a one dollar coin. Great for the coin guys, not so hot for those of us who have a plethora of effects with ol" George.
So this numb-nut introduced a bill to make the one dollar bill history. Why won't these #%*%#%'s just leave well enough alone??? Also the coin guys can weep too, because he also wants to eliminate the U.S. penny. All I can say, guys, is PRAY that ths bill falls flat on it's face. If not, kiss goodbye to saying to people "Can I borrow a one dollar bill?"

I have to disagree with you on this one. Eliminating the $1 bill and replacing with the coin (already in circulation) would save in excess of $5 billion per year (multiple estimates out there, but all exceed $5 billion). The $1 bill lasts only about 2 years in circulation, while coins last 40 or 50 years. This is an easy way to cut government expense without taking anything away from anyone. From a magician's perspective, just switch to $5 bills for paper money magic. Given inflation, we should also eliminate the penny and just round. Both these actions have already been taken in Australia and other countries. Hudson |

I respect your opinion on it, but to me the one spot has been around for a long time and is a standard in borrowed bill effects. To me nothing beats good ol' George and especially for effects like Paul Harris's night shades and such. Nothing beats being able to borrow a one dollar bill to perform great impromptu magic. Changing a one to a hundred for the hundred dollar bill switch is, well, it's just what we do.
Your mileage may vary, however. Daff

I certainly enjoy magic with a borrowed dollar bill. I do the $1 to miss-made bill; going to a $5 will be expensive for me personally. Just looking at this from a non-magic perspective.

Now, how many of you carry any of these dollar coins(other than to do magic with)? The only use I've seen of these coins that I've seen was in Boston, for the "T".

I use the $1 coins all the time. In the Twin Cities, they are provided as change from the light rail ticket machine. A ticket costs $1.75 (non-rush hour) - I typically put in a $20 to get the coins.
Our light rail ticket machines and parking meters take the coins. I also use them to buy coffee, leave tips, etc. I'm a big fan of the government saving money by eliminating the $1 bill and the penny. Hudson |

The life expectancy of a dollar bill is only 9 months, then banks are suppose to remove them from circulation, but they don't.
We are switching to credit and debit cards on our city parking meters. |

I do Dean Telefson's "Creative Finance" one of my staple effects in my stand up act. It uses gargantuan one and twenty dollar bills. Now I fear all the work I put into it over the years is about to be brought to naught and antiquated. Same with my version of Michael Close's "Rocco" also applies to "Hornswoggled" and Peter Pitt's Cash Back" where a one ends up safety pinned to the back of my coat. All antiquated if they pass this bill. Sucks.
Anybody perform Harry Lorayne's "The Heavier The Bill"? Great effect. Antiquated. I realize y'all are pretty cool with this. I just can't feel that way, though. I am not a cappy hamper any more.

One of the problems with the new $1 coins is that there is little difference between them and other coins already in circulation.
I'm in favor of the coin. It's going to take a long time to get the bills eliminated. The penny, from a monitory point of view is useless. If you go into school yards, you'll find them all over the place. Kids just throw them away. I still remember when jokes started, " A bum asks a guy if he could spare a nickel for a cup of coffee"' or was that a dime for a cup of coffee and a donut? |

Penny's useless? Not when it comes to Greg Wilson's "Dishonest Abe" Great commercial effect. RIP? Or the bent penny transposition. Or how about Dan Harlan's "Lester"? I honestly wish these people would just leave well enough alone.

I hate pennies, not from a magician point of view but more of they are useless. 1 cent coin is a joke. Though Dollars will make one effect I do a problem but I will just have to do it with a 5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwIL23_gsp0 So I know how you feel about the dollar going a way, but if it helps the economy. We need it. I can always use 5's
The only thing that is going to suck is when we go full plastic bills. Though then I guess we will just have to create more plastic bill magic |
