I recently purchased the DVD "On and Off Stage" by Mark Shortland, a UK comic magician. I am transitioning from family/kids stage magic to a more nightclub oriented style of comedy magic.

This is a two DVD set, which not only show live performances of the routines that will be taught, but then goes backstage to go over the methods and routines. There is theory, technique, etc.

The effects are pretty good, and easy to do. My only real problem with the set is that British humor is far different from American humor, and I really didn't find the show all that funny...and neither did his audience. I will go back through the DVD's and do some major re-scripting (which we should be doing anyways) to make the humor more American, and to better fit my character.

All in all, I would give this DVD set a 3 out of 5. You may find a couple of effects to incorporate into your act, and you may pick up some good theory. Is it worth the $38? In my opinion, no.

Just a a word of caution: Many of the routines he teaches will require you to buy some props (for instance, a Nielson Vanishing Ketchup bottle). This is to be expected, and isn't a problem...just letting you know up front what to expect.
